I had a small cavity filled just over a week ago..no biggie.she said it was very small and it took maybe 20 minutes to fill..all was well and good until yesterday when I bit down on a crouton at lunch and it HURT. And now it's totally sensitive to hot/cold and hurts when I bite down. DH says that happened to him the last time he had a filling and that after a few weeks it went away...anyone else had this after a filling? I mean I really DON'T want to go BACK to the dentist. Ugh.

Yes, sensitivity is very common after a filling. It never hurts to call and talk to the dentist though.

I just had a crown put on not too long ago (cracked a tooth when I was pg) and had the same thing for a short time after!!!

Okay..thanks! good to know....it only hurts when I bite down on it so I'll just try to avoid that side for a while and hopefully it will go away lol. :)

My dentist says to always go back in if that happens. Sometimes they didn't shape it quite right and your bite is off, so it often helps if they file it down a bit.

That's true, too, Chelsey. If you feel like you're hitting it when you bite, it may need to be adjusted. But even if your bite isn't off, it can still be sensitive for a while.

I am guessing you got the acrylic-type of filling? Chances are that they didn't grind it down enough to fit your bite. If you let it go then you could bruise the nerve. I got too busy with the move to Japan and let it go too long and had to go back twice to get it grinded and then regrinded. A little sensitivity is normal but if it lasts more than a few days, get back in there and let them grind it down, don't wait!!!!

I switched to Sensodyne toothpaste and that helped a lot with this problem. Might be worth a try.

It doesn't hurt when I bite down with nothing in my mouth..only if I bite down on something when I'm eating..it's really weird..like right now I'm biting down really hard on nothing and I feel nothing, but when I chew something is when I feel it..really weird.

This is going on with my cousin. And it has been over 3 months since she has had it done and it is STILL bothering her. She went back to the dentist and they said something on the lines of waiting it out a little more or possibly having to have a root canal. I'll have to check with her to get the full details.

I had this too and it was like someone else said - they didn't grind it down enough so it was throwing off my bite when I chewed. I went back in a week later and had them fix it and it made a world of difference. I still get an occasional twinge here and there but the level of sensitivity and frequency is way way down from where it was right after.
