Tree lights...

Am I like a light freak or something? This is my first year decorating a tree for our family. I read online that you should get 100 lights for every foot of tree. My tree is 7' so I got 800 lights. Ummmm.... I'm not even halfway up the tree (probably only 1/3 done) and I've used up all my lights! I like LOTS of lights... apparently. lol

I'm with you - I have a 7' tree and I use 1000 lights.

I blame it on the fact that when I was in college, I worked for a swanky Christmas shoppe and lit rich people's trees. There were people who wouldn't blink an eye at spending $5000 every year on their INDOOR holiday decorations alone! I guess I don't know how to light them any other way!!!

wow it never ceases to amaze me just how much money those who are more fortunate spend on things. 5000 dollars a year on decorations? My husband and I lived on just a little over twice that for like the first six years of our marriage

I bought a 6.5ft prelit tree this year so I have no idea how many lights it has on it, but on our old tree it was 7-7.5ft and I think I put 4-5 strands of lights on it (not sure how many lights are per strand though).

Just make sure you don't put together more strands than what the brand allows, I think the brand I used was no more than 3 strands connected to avoid being a fire hazard so I had to split them up using an extension cord & surge protector.

lol! I don't like the guesswork, that's why we got a pre-lit (artifical tree- I want a real one but my mother-in-law is allergic!)

I use a boatload of lights. I zig-zag them on the branches from the outside to the inside, so it twinkles all over the place. I think Jordan went to Walmart like 6 times our first Christmas in this house. We have vaulted ceilings, so he bought a 9' tree! LOL!! That was a TON of lights. Of course he also kept stealing my lights to use outside (put the ka-bosh on that one pretty quick though, lol), so that didn't help matters.

Wow, I don't ever put that many lights on my tree.

We have a 6 1/2 foot one and I just put 300 mini lights on it. That's what I do every year and it looks good to me.

We have a pre-lit & I have no clue how many lights are on it. I'd look, but the box is already back in the attic! :p

I usually put a ton on ours, I can't remember how many...I should say that Tony puts the lights on, not me LOL. He gets mad when I tell him there's not enough. Maybe if I put them on myself, he wouldn't complain? LOL

We are doing colored lights, but I prefer the white lights. The kids like the colored ones, so I'll deal with them until they are older and don't care any more, then I can have my "grown up" tree.

I normally use 10 strands on our 7.5' tree, but I was lazy this year. I think I used 7 this time.. but I made it easier on myself by hanging the 5 strands as I assembled the tree from the bottom up. Then I put two extra strands on the outside.

I have a 6' tree downstairs and I used 175 lights...they are larger than the mini ones though so it looks okay. The upstairs tree is 6.5' and I think there's about 200 lights on it.

Sooooooo I went and bought 800 MORE lights and ran out AGAIN!!! lol I need to get another box of lights. *sigh*

Oh my goodness, LOL! I would just space the ones you've got on there a little farther apart. You can buy a few more sets for super cheap after the holidays to have for next year.

We have LED lights this year, and those things are SO BRIGHT! I actually think we have too much light on our tree now -- you almost can't see the ornaments!

$5,000! I think my eyes bugged out of my head like a cartoon when I read that!

On another note, I do like a tree with a lot of lights. I just hate putting them on.

We have a pre-lit tree (1000 lights--white) to which we add 6-10 strands of another color each year. I'm trying to convince Andrew we should do a rainbow from top down this year. He's not going for it though.

Do it when he's not home. I doubt he'll care enough to go through the trouble of redoing it. LOL

LOL! I would, but I need him to drive me to Target to get the lights first! I don't drive and we only have green and blue lights right now.

huh... I didn't know there was a "rule" our for that... We have a prelit... and this year I put on 3 more strands on top of the pre-lit!!

We have a pre lit tree this year. I prefer a more restrained lighting to my tree, sort of a twinkling background glow.

GMBO we want to see your tree when it's lit!!! We have prob a 7' tree and probably 3 strings of lights!

:) hehe... here it is. It's a very full tree... it definitely needed lots of lights. ;)
