kids camera recommendations?

I am considering getting my daughter (4.5) a camera for christmas and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a particular brand/style. She is fairly gentle with stuff, but is still young, so I don't want to invest a whole lot on it. We are going on two major trips in the upcoming year and I want her to have one of her own. Thanks for any suggestions!

I would get her a fairly basic camera with not alot of options. There are alot of cameras made specifically for that age group but I do not think I would go that route. The quality of the photos I have heard are not that great on the kid cameras.

My DD has the Vtech one and 2 years later still plays with it most days

It's been dropped down stairs, thrown on the deck, and made it through a very ornery toddler and it still works like a charm. It's nice because now she also really likes to play the games on there.

I actually would rec. to get a "real" camera vs. those kiddie ones. We had/have the kid ones and they take crappy pictures and they don't work very well and the battery life is AWFUL. We hate them. Very frustrating. The kids do much better with my little point and shoot. I just watch them when they use it. I'd get a cheaper P&S basic digi cam!

We got one of the kids cameras when for our son last year at Christmas and it was terrible! The photos came out soooo bad and tiny, horrible cameras! So I returned it! lol! And after I got my new camera, I just gave my son my old one!!!

I definitely DO NOT recommend a kids camera, especially if you want to print/scrap any of the photos your kiddo takes!

sorrry for recommending the kiddie one, I didn't read right and thought you were just looking for an everyday sort of camera for your DD. I agree, the photo quality of the kiddie ones isn't anything you'd want printed.

I got my son a tiny Cars camera last year and it was AWFUL! He was so disappointed. My FIL recently gave him an old digital point-and-shoot and he loves it! It's only 1 MP, but it's decent enough for him. And I love that I don't have to worry about it getting broken. :)

Rae has the kiddie camera, but she just uses it for taking random pictures. They aren't good for printing or anything else. My other two kids have better ones, and I would recommend picking up a cheaper, regular point and shoot!

Kaylie got one of those little Disney Pix Micro cameras for Christmas last year and it takes the most awful photos, definitely a waste of money! She's asked Grandma & Grandpa for a "real camera" this year and I think they are planning on getting her a small P&S. I prefer Canon's myself, but I also have a small Kodak P&S that was about $65 and it doesn't take that great of pictures so I wouldn't really recommend Kodak. But I wanted something small & cheap to carry in my purse so I guess it is those things lol, and Kaylie loves taking pictures with it and could care less about photo quality.

Wal-Mart has them fairly cheap right now and they are like 8-12 megapixels...the megapixels are what make it such a great camera...so if you can spare about $80-$100..I think you can get her a fairly decent one...Abby has the little Fisher Price camera and LOVES it...I think it was a good choice and I have scrapped photos from it :)
