question about decorating trees

I was at my in-laws today and my daughter was helping put up the christmas tree. I actually walked in as she was putting on ornaments. I said Crystal you should put the garland on first not knowing she was really annoyed because her grandparents said it goes on last. She told me they kept telling her no it goes on last and ornaments go on first (their tree is prelit but I think they put light on after ornaments as well if it was not pre-lit). So now Im wondering how most people do it and thought I would ask here. What order do you do the tree? For me it is lights first, garland then ornaments and if we do icicles we do them last but since we have indoor cats we have not had icicles in awhile.

Well, I don't do garland now, but when I was growing up, my family always did lights, ornaments, then garland... reason was that ornaments went from the center of the tree out and the garland "laid" on top of the branches where the ornaments hooked from... garland was the finishing touch.

I don't put garland on my tree, but my dad used to go wayyy overboard on it! He always put the lights & garland on first and then we'd decorate with the ornaments. It seems really weird to do it in reverse, because then the ornaments would be in the way and get covered by the garland. Hmm..

I put ribbon on my tree but I put it on last. I can see why you would do it earlier though because I ended up moving a few ornaments after because they were hidden by the ribbon.

that sounds really pretty Lynette I would love to see how you do it. I do ribbon bows instead of icicles now. Just little gold bows. We only put up a 3 foot tree because the cats tend to try to climb the tree. They dont seem to be as tempted by the three foot one as the six 1/2 foot one LOL.

We haven't had garland on our tree in a couple of years but when we did it was always lights, garland and then ornaments :).

This layout has a picture of my tree from last year but the ribbon is mostly the same this year. I just wrap it around on the edges of the branches. My aunt does ribbon on her tree too but she winds it in and out so it's more wavy. I'm non patient enough to do that, haha.

that is sooo cute!! I love the way you did the journaling and the photos of the different ornaments. Was that for the digi-dare last year. Here is the one I did last year. Of course the pics were taken after the cats had knocked it over once or twice LOL

I don't do garland, but if I did I would do it before putting on the ornaments. But I guess depending on how you apply the garland, it would work either way.

Well, my interior designer cousin insisted you have to do the ornaments first. I just do whatever I feel like I wanna do...gosh (hehe, me and my Napoleon Dynamite). This year I put the ribbon on first and then the ornaments. Oh my trees are pre-lit.

We do lights, ornaments & then ribbon or garland. I usually have to move a few ornaments afterward but the ribbon helps support some of the heavier ornaments & protect the more fragile ones from little hands

Yep, it was for a Digi Dare last year.

Lights, garland then ornaments here! WIth a little adjusting of each layer here and there as needed ;-)

We do ribbon too and this year I did it after the lights, before the ornaments. I can see how you could do it last, but with the kids I had to do it first so it was easier for them to see where the ornaments should go!

Speaking of which, I really need a picture of my tree!

I think I might have to go get a small one Jessica. One of my son's moved back in with us and brought his kitten. She's a holy terror and we had to take down our tree because she was always in it and had broken too many ornaments already. Maybe just a small one with lights and bows (no ornaments).

And yes...I've tried spraying her. She doesn't care and it only makes her want to be a brat even more!

Did I mention she was a calico? (she has "torti"tude)

I bought unbreakable ornaments at walmart which are still pretty but they wont break. My cats are still tempted though. I caught one in the act last night and got some pictures of her. It was funny though as soon as the camera came out she stopped and just sat perfectly sstill. I use bead garland so the cats dont get the tinsely stuff and unbreakable oranments and bows. It looks ok for what it is. (only 12 dollars for a 3 foot tree at walmart)

Oh and what is it with calicos? We have three calicos and they all have HUGE attitudes LOL. One of them believes she should go everywhere we go. We go to open the door to leave she comes running and either jumps onto your back or on your shoulder to go along.

I think it depends on what type of ornaments you put on. We have HUGE bows with long dangling ends, so those have to go on after the garland but before ornaments so they don't get in the way of the garland or obscure ornaments.
