It said on the news tonight that this cold snap here in Florida has caused over 200 turtles to be basically paralyzed because it is to cold for them. There are some in critical condition. This weather is really something else. They also showed a picture of a power plant where the water is much warmer and there were hundreds of manatees there. Now I have seen dozens in one place on certain days but never this many. I just wish the power plants were open to the public to see all those manatees. That would be really cool

:[ poor sea turtles. they are my favorite .. lol not that really matters... but it makes me extra emo tree huggy when i hear about sea turtles struggling for whatever reason.

I love sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, whales etc. I basically grew up at the beach so anything to do with the ocean/ocean life really gets to me. We had like seven dolphns late last year beach themselves for no apparent reason. That made me really sad because dolphins are one of my favorite animals.

I saw that photo of the manetee on the news here in St.Louis...could not belive my eyes. I am an ocean animal lover, esp the manetee so I got pretty worried.

Are there any eviromental groups that are able to offer help? What are they doing to help the animals,if anything?

awww, poor things! i'm a dolphin lover myself. i have always wanted to be a marine biologist, lol. this stupid crazy weather needs to straighten up!

the manatees gather near the power plants because the water that is coming out is really warm. They are also gathered in Blue SPrings right now as well so they are not in any danger that I know of. Its just really odd to have that many in one place at a time. I think it shows their population might be growing though which is a really great thing. The turtles are being rescued by a group but cannot remember the name now. They are asking for anyone who sees a sick/hurt turtle to call and and report it as well. I think it said most of the turtles will be ok once they are warmed and there is only a handful which are in critical care. It really does show though how sensitive certain things are in the enviroment to changes. I talked to a lady at the doctors office and she has frogs at her house which literally froze on the coldest nights here. That is CRAZY!!!

I heard the same thing was happening to some tree lizards and they fell off the trees to their deaths. Mother nature can be so cruel sometimes....

I saw that too Leslie. Igaunas were dying from this cold. I saw on the news last night it explained that there are two warm fronts pushing up from the east and west coasts which is forcing the cold northern air down south. I honestly do not remember having this many cold days in a row here in Florida ever and I have lived here for like 30 years

yea another sad part of this is the agencies which are taking in the turtles are not equipped to help as many as they are getting and their resources are being quickly depleted. Wish I could help.
