i was at Meijer getting some milk and things. i hadn't eaten lunch so i was going to grab a little sandwich or something from the deli. then i saw that seperate little cooler thing with the pre-packaged ready to eat sushi. so i thought what the hell. i was eating them in the car while driving home (i like to multi task like that. i can also 'drive with my knee' when needed, lol) so i was opening up the little packets of soy sauce, and some kind of ginger or something. and it also came with wasabi. well, i have never had wasabi. i heard it was hot, but didnt know how hot. so as i was driving with one hand and using my teeth to open the wasabi, it finally ripped. waaay further than expected and a bunch of it squirted in my mouth! :D HHHOOOOOOTTTT!! i didnt have anything to drink, so i was looking around for a napkin or something to spit in (still driving), lol. daaaaaang it was hot. Needless to say i didnt put in on the sushi rolls, lol. the rolls were very good though!

just thought i'd share my first sushi experience, lol.

Lol Corey... that's a great first sushi experience! But sushi in the store is nothing compared to the little mom & pop places! I am a sushi addict!

Ouch, that must have been burning! I like wasabi and think sushi is nothing without wasabi and soy sauce! But I think it is fantastic that you tried something new

ROFLMBO. That is too funny! My DH paid my nephew $20 to eat a whole mouthful of that stuff one time. He did it, but it was painful!

A little bit goes a looong way with wasabi. And how "hot" it is depends on how fresh it is (the fresher, the spicier). That's why it's best to go to a restaurant for your sushi, though I would not try it at a Chinese Buffet - those tend to be bland and are usually just the California roll. And there are some "spicy" rolls out there - I wouldn't add wasabi to those. Oh and you might not want to be multi-tasking while eating it (trust me, I've tried that a couple times, too).

Congrats on trying something new....

i swear. if you don't like it there are a few reasons why.

1- you hate fish. period.
2- you have never actually tried it.

or

3- you have never truly had yummy sushi.

it's friggin manna from heaven.

I agree with Lizzy.

I'm a total sushi snob. We have the BEST sushi chef right here in town. I could literally DIE OF YUMMINESS.

yeah totally agree!!!

lol my dd had a similiar experience too because she lives on Tapatio and thought she could handle how "hot" the wasabi is. Um nope she couldn't. We bought one of those sushi roll makers and now we just make them whenever we feel like - yum!!!

I love fish/seafood but sorry I like mine cooked. Steamed/fried/baked/broiled/bbq'd it does not matter as long as it is cooked :)

It's actually milder raw. And the texture isn't weird like you'd think.

Cooking it brings out the "fishyness" in it.

I only eat it raw, though, because I got tricked into it. :D Once I found out, I was like oh. That was good. So now we don't care, raw/cooked/whatever. Love it all.

This is *so* true. Ever since I've tried sushi I prefer raw to cooked/heat-treated-in-whatever-way. It's finer and less "fishy". :-)

I once had a similar experience as junebug describes with wasabi -- there was this huge plate of all kinds of sushi and there was a heap of what looked like a vegetable of some kind. I took a whole mouthful and ... it was pickled ginger. That was rather hot too, eaten like this. :-)

i do love seafood. especially salmon and shrimp, so i'm not really surprised that i liked it. now i'm addicted, lol.

don't agree. I like fish. I have tried it. Not sure about #3 I guess b/c it's texture issue for me. And my mind. My mind doesn't want me to eat raw fish, no matter how good it tastes :p

me loves the california roll o'blandness :D
