speech/teacher/school/rarah questions..

you're like stars
so I was just talking to wifey about this.. ce has trouble with rhyming-- hearing the rhyme mostly. He CAN hear it when the teacher, or myself, or whoever really over enunciates the word and says it slowly etc-- but when he says the words, he doesn't hear it.
i think it's my fault.. of course..cause of the whole.. way i speak..I am thinking this may be part of the problem since ce said something that sounded more like koala whale instead of killer whale the other day. He KNOWS the letters that are in there- if i asked him to sound out and spell killer whale, he'd do it slowly and come up with (as close to a 6 yr old can) the spelling.
But I'm worried that I'm like totally jacking him up just by speaking normally.. BOTH of us, if we slow down and think carefully can obviously pronounce the words properly-- it's the fast every day normal speech that i think is conflicting.
I mean do i have to sit here and re-teach him how to speak? I always tell him to slow down while we're working and to make sure he says every sound but.. I'm not sure what I am doing :p

I know Emma talks a lot like me, but she also has her own way of saying things that I know I don't say. Like living room is "ligging room," and she can never say vanilla right. She does talk fast but she knows how to say them correctly if we ask her to slow down.

Maybe just reminding him to slow down will help. I talk fast and I know both of my kids do...my husband tells us that on a daily basis...maybe just work with him on going slowly.

yea my boys both had speech issues. They went to speech once a week for like an hour and after a few months I started to notice a huge improvement. If he has not had a speech evluation I would ask for one. Might be something that is just developmental that he will grow out of.

We have the same issues in my household...my daughter...especially when she's excited talks fast and is totally incomprehensible. If she slows down and takes her time she's fine and has shown a lot of improvement. I really seriously considered going to a speech pathologist a couple of years ago but decided not to because of the cost factor and knowing that she is capable of making all the sounds. I'm hopeful because I can hear improvement and she really works hard on pronouncing words she's having problems with. My guess is that as long as your son is capable of saying the sounds he'll be ok.

Little story for you about me...when I was young I couldn't make an r sound. I went through years and years of speech classes in school which for the most part were totally useless. When I was in 7th grade I was taken to the speech teacher there and she did something that not one other person thought to do...she taught me how to form the sound with my mouth. I only saw her one time after that and then I was done. I still have problems saying the word roar but that as far as I know is my only leftover impediment.

yeh they're doing a speech eval @ school like right now. His speech is fine and clear-- it's more of a .. stinky accent issue that involves dropping r's and mushing sounds ^_^ .. Would a speech therapist be able to work that out with him? I don't really know how that world works

most definitely a speech therapist could help that. If nothing else it would be a little one on one time with him to sort of get him in the habit of just slowing down.

oh yea if they are in the process of doing on then just give it a little time. I know both my sons took several months until I got a letter to come to the school to develop an Individual Education Plan (or IEP) you'll probably get a letter soon to discuss the results and to figure out what works best for him.
