rss feeds..

can someone help me out here? I don't blog (i'm not that interesting and I'm wayyyyy to lazy) but I would like to mark the blogs of others to read. Is this what that rss feed thing is? I don't see one on the SSD site, but I see them other places.

Also, what kind of "reader" things do you guys like best? I get the impression that these things consolidate all of the new posts from your selected sites, right? how do I set that up?

Yes, I know...I'm behind the times.

if rss has nothing to do with blogs, can someone explain that to me, too!? thanks!!

I LOVE Google Reader..it's my best friend :) You can add all the blogs you read to it and then just scroll through them all on one page

Google reader all the way! I have about 8 different folders, too, that I can keep each kind of blog in - homeschool stuff, scrap stuff, preparedness stuff, garden stuff, home stuff..so that I have all the same kinds together. You can set it up, then just subscribe to each one that you want, and read them at your leisure.

It even recommends other blogs like the ones you've subscribed yourself to!

I keep lots of individual designers on my Google Reader, plus the local news, various craft blogs (like the daily digi is a good one to follow), and then I every so often peruse the "recommended" list to see if there's anything I like there. :)

hmmm....so Blogs vs Facebook. What's the point of both? I've used facebook, I log on once a month or so...where do you guys spend all your time (not counting the games I've seen mentioned, like the Farm stuff...).

How do you decide what you do on your blog vs facebook?

Google Reader  I'm embarrassed to admit how many blogs I'm subscribed to lol

Ha, ha... Ditto!! I'm embarrassed to admit how many unread posts that I have in the large amount of blogs I subscribe too! I need more time!!!

I think of Facebook as a way to connect with old friends - see what's going on with them and share the highlights of what's going on with me. I don't usually get too personal, because I have such a wide variety of friends.

Facebook (and Twitter) are great for fairly short form comments and sharing of links, photos etc. While you can have a full blog within Facebook (write lots of words), who sees it would be rather limited. Blogs are much more public.

Most of the blogs I subscribe to are not personal blogs - they offer tips, tricks, ideas, inspiration, tutorials on anything from digiscrap to productivity, to recipes, decorating and sewing. I enjoy those the most because I can take away good ideas.

That definitely helps, thanks!!

so what is an RSS feed? (I feel like an idiot...)

and can someone link me up with their favorite blogs for tips/tricks? is that OK to do here?

thanks!

Every blog has a URL.. like https://www.sweetshoppedesigns.com/blog/ for the SSD blog.. but it also has a special URL that represents all the posts in a format that applications like Google Reader can understand. That is called the RSS feed.

If you click on the little orange (sometimes its blue) icon in the address bar (the universal symbol for RSS), that will take you to the RSS feed URL.

https://www.sweetshoppedesigns.com/blog/?feed=rss2

Most browsers will automatically ask you which feed reader you want to add it to.

My favorite scrapping blogs:

be AUDacious (Aud Neal)
Bits&Pieces (Cathy Zielske)
Katie the Scrapbook Lady
Log Your Memory
The Daily Digi
{A} (Ali Edwards)

Beckie, it's not just you! Up until now I've followed a few blog's rss feeds within my MSN browser, but it doesn't help with blogs like TDD because you only see the first paragraph or so and no pictures. It kind of just alerts me to when one of the blogs has a new post, and then I go read it on the blog's site.

I'm guessing that if so many of you use Google Reader for following TDD and other scrapping blogs, Google Reader doesn't have the same limitations. I guess I need to get that. (But I will keep only my nice, small set of blogs, 'cause I can barely find time to read those, check in here and at my CT site, scrap, and answer emails. Scratch that--when you include emails, I'm WAAAY behind.)

Google Reader definitely allows you to read full posts, as long as the author has elected that (and most do).

Another Google Reader lover here! Even if you don't find the RSS icon on a blog (or website) you want to follow, just copy and paste the blog's url into your reader, if there's a feed it'll find it!

I could survive without my Google Reader. My fav blogs are the Pioneer Woman All Feed, Cake Wrecks, Ali Edwards, The Daily Digi, and the Food Pornographer (which is going through a remodel right now so there has been no new postings :( ) I have a lot of personal finance blogs and deal seeking sites bookmarked. So I read whatever I want, star things I want to go back to later and delete the rest.

I've been using Google Reader since forever! Love it coz it's so easy to use, free, & no need to install anything. I don't like installing RSS apps coz all those feeds might clog my HD, so Google Reader just fits my needs :)
