How do I fix a leaky faucet? I mean I don't really understand whats making it leak, trust me the thing is off.... way off. Do I need a new faucet? It will stop for a bit, and then start again.

I live in a townhouse, so I have a landlord........ well lets see I have a guy I can call and he says oh I'll come up........ repeated like a gillion times.

I want hushed scrapping time and it would be complete silence besides the drip drip drip...............................

:p thank you!

I'd replace the gaskets first, sounds like a bad seal or something, but it might need a new faucet, depends on the age of the faucet, etc

If you need a quick fix to have some quiet scrapping time til you get it fixed......rubber band a ziploc baggie over the faucet. Just don't forget it and leave it to fill up and burst!

or can you put a big sponge in the bottom of the sink and that help the drip drip noise?

lol I always just call it the faucet, but where the water comes out, not below that. sorry I don't know what to call it!! oh and gasket, now you are speaking outta my league I think I just think of a gasket on a car lol!

sorry guys I don't think I've ever fixed a thing in a house! and my hubby only seriously makes it worse when he tries. He usually breaks it.

and thanks NeeNee, good ideas!! i better do the sponge thingy, or else I'll have a mess.

I agree on the gasket thing.

Call the landlord again, tell him the problem. Also let him know that if it's not taken care of in X number of days that you'll be calling for three estimates. You'll take the lowest, have the work done and send him the bill. DO NOT say that you'll deduct it from your rent. That's not always kosher (check the renter's rights for your state). Then, send him the same thing in a certified letter via postal mail.

Can you tell I've had to play hardball with landlords in the past? :D

 I'm scared of you now..... will you come take care of my landlord! :p

I know you are right! there are tons of things I've told him to fix. Shower door, cabinets, etc... and he keeps saying oh I'll be there. I need to give him another call, and then resort to more drastic measures.

A gasket is like a rubber ring that makes it so that there's a seal at the connections and you don't get leakage. You know that rubber ring in the bottom of your blender? That's a gasket. :)

ugh i feel your pain. Both the taps in our bathroom and kitchen have been leaking for ages. Its driving me up the wall. Im lucky tho, that my husband is a whizz with all things DIY, so he can easily fix it. Unfortunately the poor guy works 7 days a week, and does a night course two nights per week, and i can hardly nag him about it during the few hours he gets to himself the other nights hes home. So it just continues to drip, wasting water, costing me money and driving me up the wall. Hopefully he'll feel the urge to fix it soon.

i really need to learn how to fix things so i can help him more. I just have no idea about things like that. Id probably end up flooding the house.

Yea try the gasket. Basically you unscrew the end of the tap and it pops right off. Inside of that is the gasket. Sometimes it just filled up with mineral deposites and you can just clean it out and that might stop it...Other times you need the new rubber ring (gasket) you can get them at home depot or lowes pretty cheap. Good luck!!!

Some faucets have the gasket in the handle, instead of the nozzle. One thing I learned, don't turn the handle too hard into off, or you can force it past where the seal is, and it opens it back up, turn it very gently just until the water stops running. If it still leaks, you are most likely needing to clean or replace the rubber gasket.
