Worst mom of the month award

I think I should get it. We spent last night in the ER. Yesterday started as a rotten day. I tried to get the kids to go to bed early, feed and watered them. Jammies on and in bed. About 20 minutes later I hear a crash and my son comes running out holding his head saying he needed a bandaid. His hands were covered in blood as was half his face. I freak, I stopped myself ran to the bathroom pulled the tissue roll off the wall and ran back. I laid him down and started to clean. Had to figure out how bad it was. After a roll of tissue and a few baby wipes, I had a scared little boy with a hole in his head. He told me it hurt. It was big enough I thought it would need stitches. So I took new puppy, slung him in cage, grabbed shoes and coats and we were out the door. We run out and its snowing! Well I'm in a new country with no car, so we have to wait for taxi in the snow. (score more points for bad mom move) Then get to ER to wait 3 hours with nothing to do and two kids :/ (Husband had to work late at another base) Finally he was cleaned, which he hated. Then they wrapped him like a burrito with several holding him down and gave him some lidicane(numbing stuff). After that he was my little hero. He sat perfectly still on his own while he got his first two stitches.
His sister was busy telling everyone Xander's bleeding. (thanks kid) And mom was taking tons of pictures with her blackberry. I took so many I killed my phone!

And after all that, I still don't know how it happened. :(

Sounds to me like you get a good mom badge for getting him taken care of right away. Everything else was out of your control! You did what you could and you did it well!

*hugs* I know that none of it helps, but try not to be so hard on yourself! Kids hurt themselves, it's a part of life!

Aww things happen. Totally not your fault. Ive had a similar incident. My son and daughter were sitting in a canoe in our yard. (not in water just sitting on the ground) Well my daughter and son were pretending it was in water which was fine until my daughter started pretending it was on the ocean and it was being rocked by big waves. My husband and I were working in the yard and thought they were ok because they were sitting in the canoe. Well thats what I thought til I saw my son stand up and tried to climb out while my daughter was rocking it and I yelled at them to stop and to sit as I headed over to help him out. I could see it coming and just knew what was going to happen and ran as fast as I could to grab my son when my son went face first into the side of the canoe. It split his chin open. I mean it was relatively small and only needed like two stitches I think? He was good the whole way through and we stopped and got him a lego model to build the next day. I felt horrible about it of course. So did my daughter...she was super nice to her brother for awhile afterwards because she thought it was her fault even though I told her it was an accident. Now of course he is 16 and has only a vague memory of it and laughs about it whenever we talk about it. He has only a little scar left on his chin where he hit it.

Girl. You didn't do anything wrong. It's not like you say left the half full bottle of tylenol out where your two year old could climb up and drink it all. THAT is bad parenting. Kids being rowdy and getting a hole in a head has nothing to do with you, the good mom who took care of him AND grabbed a photo. :)

Thanks ladies. This was our first accident really. Its the first where we had to run to the ER. What a scary experience. I'm glad he made it to 4.5 before he got stitches.
Here's his hole before stitches-

Poor little guy!

my Xander is my accident kid. hehehe I have taken him to the ER more times than any of my other three children. Thankfully no broken bones or stitches needed for him, but he almost broke his jaw once (when he was 4.5) and then put a tooth through his mouth just a few months ago (he is 7 now). Those are the major injuries so far for him. Tons of minor ones that have required monitoring.

Oh honey you are not a bad mama. At. All. crap happens, and kids do stuff like that. He'll be okay. :)

Britt you did the right thing!!!! I don't know how my kids do HALF the things they do!!!!

holy cow! how scary! it sounds like you handled it just fine! ...my stomach was rolling at the thought of all that blood and the "unknown" and you did it all by yourself ... getting him help and all! You did great! ...I've never been able to take pics when things happened to my kids though...

aw your a great mom! u didnt do anything wrong! poor lil man. Glad to hear he was so brave.

When we were kids, my sister broke her arm rollerskating, and my mum left it for 2 days before getting it xrayed. My sister is her 4th kid and weve all broken so many bones that my mum thought she knew the signs and that my sister just had a sprain. My sister is a bit of a whiner at the best of times (even now at 22!) so mum didnt pay much attention to her. Funny thing is, my mum is a radiographer - you'd think taking xrays for a living, you'd recognise a broken arm when you saw one! She still feels so guilty about it, even 15 years later!

You are a good mom! Not your fault at all and you took care of him what more could a kid ask for. Heck I probably would have just told my kid to suck it up and slapped a banddaid on him and sent him back to bed. (heheh not really but I would have probably been really pissed off and yelling at everyone) You are a good mommy!

Poor little thing! Don't beat yourself up about it though - accidents happen! With my oldest we should have had a season pass to the ER from she was 2 until about 4 - she was always getting into trouble! And my 3 yo fell off the sofa last year and broke her collar bone. It's just part of being a kid I think:)
