I'm not sure this makes sense, but do the new kits we buy at the GGG sale also equal NR pts?
You know that would push me to try to use more of them asap
I know some already have them, so this may be a long shot.

I think the answer is definitely a "no", as "new release" should be really "new", i.e. from last Saturday. All GGG stuff is "old" and there would be no way of telling if someone bought it this Saturday or half a year ago, or rather, it would be too tiresome to check it, I guess.

Yep, it's a no: NR means New Release, not New Purchase!!! ;)

Here's the quote from the portfolio infos (http://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37580) post:
Earn an additional point on up to 5 challenges per month by using our New Releases to create your page! Note: New Release MUST be used within a week of its release in the shoppe to count for a bonus point (Sat-Sat). Please date your new release LO and note the kit name when recording your "NR" bonus point. Please note only 1 NR point will be awarded per CHALLENGE even if that challenge requires multiple layouts
