Which one is more family-oriented?

I'm not even sure I can talk my hubby into getting either one. He did not grow up playing any video games at all and doesn't give a flying flip abt them now; doesn't think kids should be inside just playing video games all the time, but should be outside and active. I totally agree, but thought it might be fun to have something we could play as a family.

Plus I'm a little interested in the Wii Fit stuff too. But then again, I'm recently seeing all these ads for he Xbox 360 Kinect.

So which one, do you think?

I have both the wii and Xbox (the kinect is on its way too). And I'm not a huge wii fan. In fact, I'm thinking I may put mine on craigslist even. I feel like wii had a lot of "kid games", but when looking at our game library, I have as many "kid games" on xbox. When we moved 3 months ago, I hooked up the xbox for my son and still have yet to hook up the wii. It looks like the kinect will have about the same amount of "movement" titles too. Just my opinion but I like the xbox better. Maybe get a used wii to try first if you're unsure?

Well we have an older xbox ... and a wii ... the reason the wii was chosen here was for the types of games... i.e. the boys like Mario and Luigi ... Sonic the Hedgehog ... and that series of characters were not available on the other consoles. They also thought the "new technology" of the wii would be fun ... and they have really enjoyed it.

so really the only reason we have the wii is the characters available to play ...

I bought a dance pad thinking I would use it for exercise but it's gathering dust somewhere ... drats.

Didn't buy any of the exercise stuff because I knew I wouldn't do them.

Generally we don't play as a family ... and yes the boys spend wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much time inside on video games ... trying to remember the last time they played outside ... hmmm before the wii? before the GameCube ...

If you don't limit the time ... you will most likely see your kids inside a LOT more and in front of the games. Just fyi from a mom with 3 boys ...

We have both. I'd definitely say the Wii. Now that we have the Kinect for xbox, though, I can see us using that a lot. There just aren't as many kinect games yet... so for not Wii. LOTS of kids games... family game night games (#3 came out this year)...

Honestly for the type of gaming you are talking about, a Wii would be better. We have a Wii and an Xbox, and the Xbox is more a gamers type of console, and a Wii is more like a group activity type gaming system. If you are thinking you are all going to do it as a family, a lot of the games on the Wii are more set up for groups, where a lot of games (not all) on the Xbox are set up as single player. We also watch Netflix on the Wii, and I love that a lot of the games can be played online if you set it up that way.

I'm pretty against video games and game systems. My family was never HUGE on it--we had some, but my brothers were never too addicted. But, I'm afraid of that happening (though, my girls would have no problems, they don't care about that stuff right now). Anyway...that being said, I decided to surprise my hubby with a Wii a few years ago and I think it's great for families. There are still games that are a little more "video game like" than I'd like, but we don't really have those. We mostly just have the active fun ones and it's great for the whole family!

We have an x-box and a kinnect. The kinnect is really fun! And the games are wonderful. I'm getting the fitness programs that they have. What's nice is we just buy the games and don't need all these extra controls/add-on's to make it work.

We have found a lot of fun family games that we all play together on the xbox. Our favorites are the Hasboro Board games that they made into video games! Pictureka is soooo fun! (they may have this stuff on the wii, though) But we find plenty of fun stuff to play for the kids. What's also nice is that the system has the games that my DH prefers to play too. So I think it reaches a wide ageange. Also almost every game we own is multi-player or can play across x-box live. That was very important to us because dh travels and will play games with the kids while he's away. Also we watch netflix together while he travels.

We have a Wii, but we bought it for us, not the kids.

Keira is 5 1/2 and doesn't play it. She has a vsmile and computer cool school and those are the only games I let her play.

It really depends on what type of games you want to play. We LOVE the Mario games so we went for the Wii.

We had both but got rid of Xbox becuz we had a lot of problems with it. We have the Wii and Wii Fit, Gamecube, Playstation 1, and the original Nintendo (I just can't part with it). Personally I could do without all those systems but we picked the Gamecube and Playstation up at yard sales for CHEAP!

My almost 19 year old considers himself an expert on gaming :p and he has both a wii and an xbox 360. He recommends the wii for families and for kids under 14. There are lots of games already for the wii in that age group. We have a wii at home and enjoy playing it together as a family and my 7 year old plays it by himself.
The xbox is moving that direction with more family/kid games for the kinect, but Jacob says the xbox is considered more a 'mature audience' system with their hard-core gamer leanings. He and all his friends at his college dorm play on the xbox, but they are playing Halo and Call of Duty killing-type games. He is selling off his wii because he feels he 'outgrew' it.
Best of luck on your decision! :)

The Wii...simply because Mario Kart is the coolest game ever invented and it can get even my two boys playing like they are best friends and that says ALOT!! LOL. Even my husband and I love playing Mario Kart!!

We just have the Wii but even if giving the chance to get it free I wouldn't get an Xbox. When you accept the terms of use you give Microsoft the right to "monitor" your usage of Xbox live.

That's just way to "big brotherish" for me!!!

But we LOVE our Wii, my 3 older kids are the ones to use it alot and they are quite a bit older then your kids (12, 8 and 6). But we got it when my now 6 year old was 3 and he loved palying it then.

We are thinking of the xbox with Kinect, but I think we'll wait another year, until DS is just a little older!

we are another PS3 family :) but we also have a Wii and XBOX...but for a family I would totally recommend the Wii and the Wii fit!!! The Wii fit is alot of fun and there are alot of games you can play as a family! Bowlign is seriosuly fun and so is Wii Resort Plus! We also have 4 wheels to play Mario Kart as a family :) My DH {gaming geek} says the Kinect is not worth it, but I don't have any personal experience...we are getting my DS the PS3 Move Bundle for XMAS....and I think the Wii controller is easier to use than the XBOX controller :)

Oh I should add... I'm not sure how old your kids are, but my boys (6 1/2 and almost 5) love to play the Lego games (Indiana Jones, Bat Man, Star Wars...) together on the Wii. But we also have a PS2 in their room with some of those for it too and they do fine with those controllers too.
What we do is limit their time on it to 30 minutes after homework is done, and then 30 minutes after we straighten up before their dad gets home.

I chose the Wii. My boys loved their Nintendo consoles they've had over the years. They now love their other systems and we haven't gotten a Wii yet, but I know for your kids' ages, they would recommend the Wii.

I bought my niece and nephew a GameCube a few years ago because my brother and sis in law had been very anti video game, but when they moved back east, they really needed more activities for the kids to do indoors when it was really really cold, or way too hot to be outdoors. They loved it so much, that the kids saved up their own money last year to buy a Wii. They are 10 and 11 and they just love it. They still aren't allowed to play a lot of video games, or be on for very long, but they are both super athletic and involved in different sports year round, so it hasn't been a problem.
