Holiday Festive?

For the past few years, about 10 couples in our community have gotten together and hosted a party complete with food, band, etc. at a local night club. These people are like the big-wigs in town -- the popular lawyers, the top business owners, the younger elected officials.

My husband told me that we've been invited for years, but he hasn't mentioned it to me (and we obviously haven't gone) because he knows I hate those kinds of things w/ such hoity-toity (word? sp?) people.

But, with the economy the way it is and business really slow (hubby has a landscape design, construction and management company) he feels like we really need to go this year to hob-nob with the big-wigs. Thinks it will be good for business, which I'm sure it will be.

So, I'll be finding the wine approximately 2 seconds after getting there and praying he doesn't leave me by myself at all the whole night!

But here's my question: He said the invite says the dress is "holiday festive". What the heck is holiday festive? I'm thinking it means dressy, but I honestly have no idea! I'm already insecure around all these women who spend probably thousands a month making themselves look as they do. Now I have to worry about what to wear - ugh! :)

So, help me out, what would you think would be "holiday festive"?

Thanks!!

I just googled and one site said it's the equivalent of "black tie". Which would mean long gowns and gloves!! I'm scared for ya Kresta!!!

Okay, wait, just found this: http://clotheshorseok.wordpress.com/2008/12/12/what-to-wear-to-a-holiday-festive-party/

Holiday Festive fits right between cocktail and business attire, a tad less dressy than cocktail and a bit more fancy than what you would wear to work. Holiday Festive dictates that you can be playful, women can wear a silk or chiffon top paired with a pencil skirt or slacks or a playful shorter length dress in a holiday color like red or emerald green.

Dress down a cocktail dress by throwing on a matching jacket and belt or wrapping a cashmere kimono sweater over the top. Women can also pair a basic black shift dress with a bold, glittery necklace and killer heels. This look is all about having fun while still being stylish.

usually when i go to things like this - i wear something like black pants w/ a sequin top or sweater, velvet skirt w/ sequiny top/sweater, sequin dress ... LOL - i like sequins :) or anything chiffon-y or satin-y - i have a couple of tops that kind-of wrap around the body and tie on the side or button on the side w/ sparkle-y buttons - some are see-thru and i wear a cute tank under ... i wear these w/ fancy black pants or pencil skirts or similar ...

i think bold jewelry can really dress up anything too - like a basic LBD with some fancy jewelry (i make my own jewelry so i go kind-of crazy - LOL ) and cute shoes?

maybe things like:

Yeah, I wouldn't go formal. I would do the black skirt/pants thing with a shiny top and dress it up with jewelry. Make sure your clothes are comfy since it sounds like that may be the only thing comfortable for you all night. I'm with you...I hate those sort of events and avoid them as much as possible.

My tip...find the other wife in the room who looks as uncomfortable as you (there will be at least one) and strike up a conversation. :)

Yes! Well, I think the architect that works for us, and his wife, are also going, so at least I'll know someone! :)
