S/O of Laura's Hair Cut Thread

Well, Laura inspired me. I've been thinking of chopping my hair off for quite a while now. Here's the style I'm looking at:

So, my question is: How much do you tip your stylist? I will most likely just be getting the cut - no styling or color. Of course, I may have her style it this time just so I know how I to do it. But, I'm just wondering about tips. What do you guys do?

Your images aren't showing up for me, Lydia.

Tipping--I don't. I go to a salon that doesn't allow tipping. I found one in WI that had that policy and made it a point to find one here that did as well. I presume they pay their stylists well enough to forgo tipping. When I did tip in the past, it was usually 10% of the cost of the service, occasionally more if they did an absolutely amazing job.

I'm not seeing your pictures either.

On tipping, I tip 15-30%, but would do 15-20% for a new stylist. Once I have a relationship with that stylist, I bump it up, especially around the holidays and if she has made a special appointment for me, worked me in at the last moment, etc. Around here most hairdressers lease a chair at a salon so they aren't paid by the salon and rely on tips. Plus, it's such a personal service that I'd want to tip.

Anyway, lets see those pics! I can't wait to see what you are choosing!

Weird. I can see the images on my lappy but not on my phone. I'll play with that in a bit.

I'm a general $5.00 tipper, of course if I was having a major make-over it may increase.

I don't get my hair cut in the salon very often, I almost never have it colored there (it's easier for me to just grab a box & go)

i always tip :/ the girl i go to is a friend of mine and it's pretty heavily discounted so i feel since she doesn't charge me an arm and a leg, i can help her out a little. i generally give her $5 if it's just a cut and $10 if it's the works.

I tip and I tip well. They offer a custom service for me so I think if they do a great job, they should be tipped more than I'd tip a waitress who only takes orders and brings food. My stylist only charges $25 for a cut, which is about half I used to pay for a cut when I lived in Tucson. And she's better than any other stylist I've had. So, I tip her up to $8-10.

I'm the same way, Megan. I pay $25 for my cut & usually tip $10. I have an amazing stylist! Plus I drive about an hour to her salon, so I'm also paying about a half a tank of gas! But, she's worth it!!

I don't have any ties to a hairstylist... probably because I only get my hair cut once a year.. :D... however, I do tip around $10 or so depending now how well she/he does on my hair - and the number of times they cut me... I'm not joking... one lady cut me three times in the course of a haircut - I didn't leave her a tip, I needed that money for bandages... ;)

Okay - do the images work now?

Anyway, I'm going to a gal in my neighborhood who has a salon in her basement. I've never been to her before, so I don't even know what she will charge for the cut or if she's giving my any type of discount. From what I've seen on other people, though, she does a good job, so I want to plan on giving her a good tip. Thanks for your ideas. :)

I see the pictures now! I think that style will look cute on you!

It's similar to my cut, so just to let you know with a cut that short you need to go into to have it trimmed about every 6 weeks. Any more time than that and you hair starts touching your shoulders and flipping out like this.

and unless that is a look you want, then you have to go back to get frequent haircuts. I really like the style that I have in my avatar, but because of the high frequency of haircuts, I've decided to grow mine out. Once I get it past the grow-out stage, I'll decide which way I liked it better.

One way to see around how that style will look on you is to go to http://www.dailymakeover.com/virtual-makeover . Upload your pic and check out the hairstyles that are listed under Jenny McCarthy, Jenna Jameson, and Kelly Clarkson they have similar styles listed under them. There are others too, but those were the only ones I could remember offhand.

I get my hair cut every 4-6 weeks, and also get my brows done at the same time. To get my hair cut, dried, flat-ironed, and my brows ends up costing me about $40, and I usually tip $10-15 on top of that. I love my stylist and am very loyal to her, so I tip more.

I love your hair Julie and have it cut that way but my hair nautrally flips out even after using the flat iron on it. It drives me insane.

Let's see....if I just go and get a trim by a "chain" place...then I usually just give $5. When I had long hair I was really bad about getting my hair cut....maybe once a year to trim up the edges.

I just got all my cut over the weekend for Locks of Love and went to a brand new person!!! I was sooo scared but she did great and I was there for over two hours!!! I ended up giving her a $20 tip....I had it highlighted and my hair cut was free since I donated but it still ended up costing me over $130!!! It's a good thing I don't have to get my hair highlighted that often...maybe ever four years b/c I have tons of natural highlights when I am out in the sun!!

I usually range from $5-$15...depending on where I am going. I really liked the girls that chopped my hair so I would imagine I would give her $10-$15 per visit for a cut.

I usually do 15%. I have been thinking of pumping it up though now. She used to own the salon so I felt I didn't need to do a lot, but now she sold it and just works there, so since I like her, I am thinking a bit more. I only go 2-3 times a year max though.

I usually tip my stylist with 2 bags of Hershey toffee nuggets! If the cut is just "okay", then I only tip with 1 bag.

(oh... I forgot to mention that I actually do my own hair! If I make a mistake I always tell people that my stylist was having a bad day! Lol)

Yes. I like it a lot a lot. I still have to play with it a little and figure out exactly how I want to "do" it, but I'm glad I got it chopped. It's fun to do something a little drastic every now and then. :)

Now, I think we need some pics of Laura. :) I saw on FB, but we need pics here, don't you think?

Thanks guys! You sure do know how to make a gal feel all warm and fuzzy.
