Resizing Images for the Gallery

I finally started to establish a gallery for the first time. I have searched the forums about how to resize my layouts and I've been following the directions from the awesome blog that Sheri did about this very topic. Despite following Sheri's directions to my best ability, my resulting images are still showing up terrible at 150kb when I upload them to the gallery.

I took a class from Jessica Sprague awhile back and I have followed her directions for saving for the web and I get the same crappy results.

Other peoples layouts look great!

What am I doing wrong?

It'll be the most helpful if you tell us exactly what you ARE doing, so we can eliminate the issue.
I always flatten before I do anything else. Some people don't have issues with this, but I find my shadows are always WAY off I don't flatten first.

Good point.

Method 1
I flatten my image with Layer-flatten image
Image-Image Size and change to 600 x 600
Duplicate my image with Command J
top copy I do Filter-Other-High Pass
Choose the setting 0.2
Change the layer mode of the high pass layer to overlay
file save for web
upper right drop down arrow I optimize to file size 149

Method 2
Image-Image size
check resample image box
set resolution to 72
file save for web
set quality to 80
check the convert to sRGB box
save

Neither one look good!

Thanks in advance!

I save my file as a JPG, then open the JPG and resize to 72, and change the size to 600x600 px. Then I sharpen, and save for web and maximize the file size to 149K. I find I get the best results by reopening the flat file, and saving that way.

Great Jen! I'm going to give that a try. Maybe that is what my problem is! I was starting with the psd file. How do you "sharpen"?

I'm not at my computer, so I can't check my settings, but I used a tutorial I found on someone's blog to get the settings right.

Hi Amy,
I checked your gallery and I see what you're talking about. It looks to me that there is a setting in your "save for the web" options that is wrong. Can you check to see what they are and post back? The images in your gallery are highly optimized, even through they are not small in file size, which is really unusual.
