DD Washed her Camera!

Calm me down. Tell me it's going to be OK.

*deep breath*

I feel sick.

She's 10 and was told to get her laundry started so that she had clean clothes for tomorrow. At some point, she must've thrown her camera in her laundry hamper in effort to "clean" her room. And she dumped the whole thing in the washing machine. :(

It's a Canon Powershot. We bought it for her on her birthday last January. It was washed inside the cloth case.

Is there any hope for it?

Oh no. I'm so sorry that happened.

No good answer. Does anyone know if the rice trick that you can use for cell phones would work?

My kiddos dropped my brand new fuji fine pix in the bathtub two hours after I got it a few Christmas's ago...It was trashed-I hate to say...I was devastated. My parents bought it on ebay so no sending it back.

What do you do with the rice? Just fill a container and set the device in it?

I have it sitting over top of a register right now, with the battery/SD card compartment open. Each time I put the battery back in, it turns on, does something and then freezes, but it seems to be getting better each time.

I don't want to yell and scream at her. What's the point? I don't want to make her feel terrible or hurt her self-esteem, but she can be such an airhead and doesn't exactly have a habit of taking "great" care of her things. I am just so disappointed. I am hoping that this is something that she will eventually grow out of (sooner, rather than later).

We gave her the wet camera and told her that this is what happens when you don't take care of your things. She apologized right away and I cried. We told her that she will start to pay back the cost of the camera in lunch money (they get money at least twice a week for pizza and sub days). So when her sister gets lunch money for those "treat" days, she will pack her regular lunch and we will write the amount down on her pay back list. She can see how long it takes to accumulate that amount of money.

I just feel so sad.

I was going to say -- whatever you do, don't try to turn it on for several days until it's good and dried out. Remove the battery and the card and put the camera in a bag of rice. The rice absorbs the moisture from inside the camera and dries it out. May not work since you're already tried to turn it on. Once you do that, you can short out the guts of the camera.

omgosh . . my daughter washed her DS once, cos she'd accidentally dropped it in the bin . . aargh! We just left it for days and days to dry out, and it's been fine (thank goodness!!)

Good luck :)

Yep, I would also have suggested to not turn it on until a couple days to make sure it's really really dry and it won't make a shortcircuit (is that the name in english?). Hope it'll work!

It's been in the rice for 24hrs. and it seems to be getting better. It let me set the date/time and flip through some pictures on the SD card, but still won't take a picture. So I put it back in the rice and we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Just leave it in the rice for a few days more. Don't take it out and turn it on again. My Rebel took a bath a few summers ago and the bag of rice gave me several more months of life out of it. It wasn't perfect in that the batteries never held a charge properly after that, but it worked for what I needed it for at the time. I'm pretty sure I left mine in the rice for a week, along with the battery and memory card that were in the camera when it got wet.

My sister just got a brandnew macbook pro, on which she spent a ton of money (even on student loans etc.), and then - within the first month of having it - spilled a drink over it (and she's one of the careful type of people, never careless with her things). Must have been real bad, since the computer was dead immediately. When I heard the news just two weeks ago, I was devastated. They did the rice thing - took apart the whole machine and put the pieces into a box of rice. Lost her warrantee, of course, but now it seems to work again, except for the part where the cord gets connected. That must have gotten fried. They ordered the piece to replace it, but most likely she'll be able to use the computer again, soon.

Just telling you for some encouragement. Even if the camera still had warrantee, you probably lost it with the water damage, which means, if you can find someone tech savy, try to get them to open up the whole thing (asap, b/c you don't want the corrosion to start), and put it into a box of rice until it's entirely dried. There might be a slight chance of it working again. It's at least worth a try, right?

Don't don't don't don't don't don't power it on ... be patient ... let it sit for a week to two weeks opened up to totally dry out. My husband works at Sprint and we hear about phones being dropped in water (my mother is notorious for jumping in her pool with her phone in her pocket) ... they tell her to **NOT** turn it on for over a week ... leave it opened up with battery out or else it will fry the battery and phone.

I don't know about the rice ... I would wonder if particles would get into the mechanism and mess up the lens/zoom.
