Hair Help Please

Tomorrow I have an appointment to get my hair done. I want something a bit different, but I have some things holding me back. I have a bad colic and thus can't do that sideswept thing, my hair is stick straight and won't hold a curl and I need to be able to put my hair into a bun at work. Its currently about an inch below my collar bone. Also if you can help with color, I am thinking red. Here's a picture from last summer.

what about adding layers? The bun does limit things since you need it on the longer side. And I love red I just wish it would stay in my hair!
