So hubby got me a new laptop yesterday and I spent all night trying to figure out how to transfer my ACDSee. Well since I use version 10 and they are now up to version 14, none of the info is current. I've only been able to find some vague references. Plus I've read lots of places that version 10 may or may not work with Windows 7!!! :glare:

I refused to loose my tags....the scrapping I don't care about but I have spent considerable amount of time (weeks and weeks) tagging my thousands and thousands of photos. There is now way I could do it all over again!!

So I just decided to upgrade...I figured I'd download the trial..see if I can move my database, embed the meta data and if I can accomplish that's I'd just purchase it and move it.

Well I started at 7AM this morning and I am now on almost hour 6 of Rebuilding thumbnails!!! :cursing: I still have 2 more freaking steps to go for the conversion to be complete!!! Plus every where I have read it's going to take some time to do the embedding too!!! :crying: I might get to use my new lappy by next weekend!!! :crying:

oh good luck! that's one of the worst parts about upgrading! hopefully you don't lose anything!

This is all why I gave up on ACDSee and Picasa. I was so tired of having to re-tag things, etc. Good luck! I hope it works for you!

Good luck! I hope that goes more smoothly than what I am trying to do right now.....I can't use CS4 on my new laptop.....We have installed and uninstalled three times now.....I keep getting a "parse" file error after using it for about an hour or so. I am back on my old laptop for now until we can figure it out.....if we can't then my new computer is going back to the store!!!:(:( My poor DH has tried just about everything he can.

Oh no! I know that I need a new laptop, but I'm dreading it because of having to move everything over, and purchase new programs (I'm going from PC to MAC). I hope it speeds up for you soon and you can use your new laptop very soon!

Oy vey... I haven't taken the jump to using any sort of tagging system.. I keep thinking I should, but all the legwork to get it situated is so intimidating to me.. I can't even imagine having to do it all twice!

I've always worried about this too, Elisabeth. I have never had to transfer my ACDSee database but I'm already scared for the moment I'm going to have to! I hope it works and that you don't lose your tags!

well ladies the conversion when smoothly without one little hiccup!!! I just got done embedding the metadata and all of them of but only about 5000 of over 100,000 files already had it embedded!!! Now I'm optimizing my data base and then I think I'll start the process of transferring it!!! I'll let you all know how that goes!!! But if it goes as well as the conversion I'll be happy!!!! :D

I got a new desktop last month and I am still missing things. Mine crashed on me, so I got it back up and limped getting stuff transfered over, but forgot a bunch. Sucks.

Just FYI I have Windows 7 and it works fine for ACDSee10, but I'm sure that it will be better in the long run to have updated it.

Thank goodness I have a geeky hubby that handles all that. My catalog is on my external and so I can use it on either my desktop or laptop. But that was a PITB to get working initially. So I'm praying the thing never dies!

I meant to update this thread a while ago!! So just in case anyone searches the forum for this subject!!!

Well the embedding was a waste of time!!! I think because I was transferring my files from an EHD to my new lappy. I tried it like 2 times and when I tried to catalog the files on my new lappy it only transfered like 20% of my categories and tags!!!

So what I did was just export my datebase from my old lappy to my EHD, then plugged the EHD into my new lappy and clicked import database. It transferred in a snap!!!

Now I still had the task of moving everything from the EHD and I realized about 1/2 through my photos that I should have just moved everything instead of just copying (I wanted to keep all my files on the EHD for backup) because I then realized I would have a double the tagged thumbnails in ACDSee!!!

But that was an easy fix (if not time consuming because it took forever for my database to optimize), I just ran database maintenance and choose the drive that was my EHD and removed all thumbnails with one click!!!

I hope all my trial and error can help someone else down the line!!! :D :D
