Anyone out there sew????? I am looking for a new machine...It has to sew through some pretty thick layers ( I make purses) and I would love multiple COOL stitches. Not electronic, I am an old fashioned and like the pressure foot!!! Willing to spend around $250.00 maybe more if it is really good!!!! I have gone through 3 machines already and really want one that will work for a LONG time!!!! Thanks for any and all help....

I use a brother machine and love it. My mom who makes purses and quilts has a great huskavarna but it is much more expensive. I think my brother was about 300 at the time I bought it. Or hubby bought it for me really. This is the closest to mine that they have online Sewing Machine.

Hope that helps.

I got a Brother online at Overstock for Christmas. It was a refurbished one, but I haven't had a single problem wtih it yet.

Hey thanks girls....I did have a Brother and the thing really sucked but it was a SUPER cheap machine so I guess you get what you pay for!!! Off to check them out..Thanks for your help and keep your suggestions coming..PLEASE!!!

lol my brother has withstood connor :D I don't think I'll ever try a different machine LOL. He thought it was a piggy bank for a while-- all sorts of crap was in there, but it still works perfectly fine LMAO

That is good to know...I am seriously considering giving Brother another shot for sure....

I had a Brother that did not sew well through thick fabrics, and broke down on me. I replaced it with a Viking that is $$, but sews like a dream through anything!

Janome is top-notch stuff. I have one and love it (poor thing has been collecting dust the past couple years though!).

I did a lot of research before buying my machine, and came to the conclusion that spending more money was not a bad thing. I lurked on a lot of sewing and quilting boards and the general consensus was you really do get what you pay for. If you're going to be sewing heavy duty things like purses, get a machine that is designed to handle that. Since you said you've been through 3 machines already, consider if the cost of those three had been invested in a higher end machine from the start. I'd do yourself the favour of investing in that now and you likely won't regret it.

Track down sewing forums and find women who are sewing similar projects to yours and see what machines they're using. My model Janome is geared towards quilting, but not really thick, tough things like purse seams. I'm not sure what model of Janome you'd want to look at, or another brand might specialize more in that type of sewing. Whatever the case, tons of research and being willing to spend a bit more money to get a machine you'll have for the long haul are well worth it IME.

HA HA HA. You can tell how much I do NOT sew. Or have any inclination to ever do so.

When I read your post, La, I was like, 'And what does her having a brother have to do with sewing? Does he do her sewing for her?!' *lol* Then I realized it was the BRAND NAME of a sewing machine.

:p

Mine is the Sapphire 830. I think that exact model has been discontinued, but they've obviously got new models that are similar.

My only experience with sewing machines is from my moms and when I was in junior high in home ec. We had Janome machines at school - they were high-end machines. I think my mom has a Brother, and has had it for YEARS (at least 20). Both of my grandmas had Singer brand machines and actually I have one of them (it's 40 years old and it works, though Mason buggered up all the settings and I don't know enough to fix it, so I have to wait for my mom or dad to come do it for me, lmao).

Here's a sewing forum that I know about. The ladies are very nice and knowledgable. I am a sewer, so I'm not going to give you advice you want to hear :) Invest in the most machine you can afford. You get what you pay for with sewing machines. I paid $2000+ for my Bernina 7 years ago and it sews like a dream. But, I sew my own clothes, so it was worth the investment to me.

Not that I am a sewing expert but I have never heard of this brand before!!! I will check it out though..thanks

When I bought my machine a family friend who has sewn for forever recommended either Bernina or Janome. The Berninas were out of my price range but the Janomes are supposed to be some of the best for entry level sewers. Guess it just depends on what you're trying to do. I did do a lot of research before I bought anything and the reviews for both Brothers and Singers were pretty poor/mixed. Janome also makes the Kenmore brand machines so you might be able to get the same machine for less under the Kenmore name.

Try looking on Ebay and Craigslist too. I just purchased a brand new Brother machine with the warranty and all for $50.

Granted it is a basic machine but I think it was like $150 at Joanns
