{N}SBR: Money Management Software

Hey ladies-

Depending on how detailed you all are with keeping track of finances, this question could also apply to scrapbooking! LOL What do you use to manage your finances? Quicken? Microsoft Money? Mint.com? Another method?

I'm an organizing *nut*, but until now have never really felt the need for a super detailed spreadsheet/tracking system. However...for the same reasons as the rest of the world, times are tough and I thought this would help Jay and I to be even better about spending/saving.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts and ideas! :)

I used to use Microsoft Money but it got pushed to the side and forgotten about. That was several years ago. I do need to come up with something, though, because we're living paycheck-to-paycheck and it needs to stop!

I use microsoft money .. well I need to clear it out and start fresh now lol.. but it really worked for me. I liked how it was set up. I've never tried anything else because I was happy with that one :D :D

I just use an Excel spreadsheet. I have one for all the household finances and a separate for all my scrapbooking purchases. I've used Money in the past and I actually find this to be a lot easier now that we have it all set up. I've been using it for about two and half years and it's worked really well for us. It does mean I have to go in and manually input everything but I find that I pay more attention doing that than if I just downloaded everything from an account. If you want more specifics, let me know.

oh i wanted to say.. lol Lynette reminded me.. I used ms money more like a spreadsheet instead of dl'ing the acct info and stuff.. I mean I enter all the bill info in etc, but I still go in and manually tell it yes no whatever, change amounts, enter misc spending.. I just like the program :D :D I'd prolly survive with a boring spreadsheet just fine though lmao. once you get into a routine-- it'll be a piece of cake no matter what method you use.

Thanks, gals! In reading reviews for Quicken/Money, people weren't that impressed, so maybe 'ole Excel will be just fine, but it's good to know they work for people too. I think I just need to be better about keeping up with all the inputs and get a system going (as you said!) The "paying more attention" is the part that's drawing me to keeping track of the fine details....

Mint.com does look pretty cool, eh? :) Although in reading their forums, there were several "critics" of their security procedures/policies which make me think I should shy away...

I use Quicken...I just downloaded the latest version last week...I keep track of all my accounts (bank, credit, 401k, ect.) I love it because I just download the transactions into Quicken and reconcile...

I use MS Money and I really like it. My fave thing about it is being able to categorize my expenses and being able to pull reports with that info to tell me where I am financially (what I've been spending where, etc.). We're pretty specific w/ out budget, so I created my own categories to correlate with out budget and specify each expenditure within those categories. Makes analyzing it all (which I'm not so good at naturally) much easier.
