03*05*2017 ONAWA challenge: The Art of Being Deliberate

So I am typically a “white space” scrapper – I tend to have very minimalistic pages. Not many photos, not many elements – my style may seem a bit sparse, but I am very deliberate in what I create. Let’s take a closer look at the shadows on my example lay out. All of the shadows are in the same direction and look as if the light source comes from one distinct area. I also size my shadows depending on the expected physical weight of an element. The photo is stapled at the upper right corner only so the distance between the paper and photo is minimal there and where the photo is loose from the page the shadow is stronger. On clusters, depending on what is beneath and on top of an element should determine the strength of your shadow. Think of what it would look like in the “real world”, an item laying over multiple items would create more shadow than something that lays flat.
Another deliberate tie in my example is the photo of my daughter waking up, to the title of “good morning sunshine” plus the little bits of yellow accent color I used to play on the color of sunshine.
This month’s challenge is to be deliberate in your lay outs. Think about the cohesiveness of it all – how it all ties together…
Rules for this one:
~At least one photo
~ Use as many elements as you wish, but at least 3 decorative elements in an accenting color that ties into your theme
~Use 100% Sweet Shoppe Designs products, with 75% being On A Whimsical Adventure products. https://www.sweetshoppedesigns.com/s...ufacturerid=60
~Once completed, post your layout in the gallery; then come here and post the link to your layout in the comments below. Make sure to note your deliberate actions in your comment…
~Deadline for this challenge is March 31st.
~All entries will be eligible to be entered into a drawing for an $8 coupon to On A Whimsical Adventure!
~Have fun!
I cannot wait to see what you all do!!!!

I can NOT resist a great challenge (even if I can't qualify for the prize)! This one was especially fun. I was intentional about my shadows and maintaining a lot of white space (I know -- it is busy white space!).

Barbara, I love the way the peach color flows through your choice of elements/background/photo - just perfect! :

Diane: I always love what you bring to the table!!! This kind of white space actually allows the focus to be on the gorgeous background you chose!

Thank you both for playing!

Would love to participate, being new here, I'm wondering if I use the freebie mini kit you have in the store would I still be eligible? Thanks for clarifying.

Anja 03-18-2017 02:46 AM

Thanks, Anja! I can't wait!!!

I used your Ex Libris freebie (and a butterfly from Erica Zane's retired kit "All Fall Down") to create this:

I used the glasses and butterfly elements to tie into her new glasses which feature a butterfly on the side.

Thanks for a fun challenge!

Sophia, I LOVE the crop on your photo! That thin line around the focal area is perfect.

This is my first Sweet Shoppe challenge I've done so, I don't have much of a stash built up yet to choose from, so I started backwards for my challenge. I usually start with a photo, then find the perfect kit for it, but instead I started with a kit and found the perfect photo for it. I am very big on making the kit color scheme match the picture, so I was deliberate in searching for an older photo that matched not only the vintage look of the kit, but also had some of the colors accented in it. I found this photo from 17 years ago when I walked out and found my family sitting on the couch reading. I caught this candid photo of them all together. My mom's dress matches the kit color scheme perfectly. The accent elements are a key, reading glasses, and a faded picture of a girl reading. To tie all those together, I chose a title "Books are Keys," and also did a fade effect around my photo to tie in the faded girl accent. I was also deliberate in my title's drop shadow to make it pop since that is what ties all the pieces together cohesively.

So sorry...I'm still trying to learn to navigate. Let me try the picture for my post again:

Jenn that is such a lovely entrance to Sweet Shoppe Challenges! I love your deliberate use of color and your elements (the reading glasses - sigh!) tie in to the title!!! Way to Go!!! Thank you so much for playing!!!

SEED

Everything is from On A Whimsical Adventure.

I began with the Thoreau quote (instead of a photo.) I wanted to make a layout about gardens, so chose one of the Vintage Herbarium papers, and a twig frame to emphasize the theme. It seemed the quote page wasn’t standing out enough, so I added a paper frame beneath the twig wreath. For a bit more interest I added two bird & floral stamps, but did them as overlays so they are just a hint of pattern. Then the frame for the page, and finally, that red spot at the bottom of the paper seemed to call for more red, so I added the transfers.
