Silhouette cameo owners check in!

Hello folks, I am seriously considering getting Cameo for me. I am especially attracted by all the printy-print stuff for fabric and glitters and so on. I am just curious to know your experience :)
Thanks!

Mari Koegelenberg 07-06-2013 09:50 AM

Hmmm I have not printed on fabric with my current printer but I did do some fabric cutouts with my silhouette for my son's bedroom...I used the dinosaurs in my Dinosaur Rawr's kit. I used a iron on interfacing...you can get it here:

http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/?page=shop&cat=5

I had really good results and the fabric was a thick cotton almost denim.

NeverendingJen 07-06-2013 10:54 AM

Not a cameo, but a portrait user. I love it. I have used so much stuff with mine. The only thing that gets a thumbs down from me is the software, and that's simply because I don't find it as intuitive as photoshop.

Mari Koegelenberg 07-06-2013 11:45 AM

Oh man yes...hate hate that the zoom feature does not work with shortcuts gaah! lol

NeverendingJen 07-06-2013 11:54 AM

yes. I really find it so clunky.

DeepGirl 07-06-2013 12:07 PM

Mari - when it comes to the heat transfers, you print it on a ink jet printer and then get it cut by Silhouette?

heathergw 07-06-2013 01:52 PM

I've never used it for fabric... but I LOVE my Silhouette almost every day... I like the software... though I have the Design Edition which makes a lot of things easier, especially fill pattern and print and cut :) I use it pretty much exclusively for Project Life :)

Mari Koegelenberg 07-06-2013 03:08 PM

hmmm you dont need a silhouette to do the printable iron on transfers...although it will give you a nice clean cut for ironing on.

DeepGirl 07-07-2013 01:48 PM

Currently I have Canon printable print transfers, but not happy with them. Of course I want to do also cut-outs and paperie, but this "value added" makes it even more attractive for me. :)

Mari Koegelenberg 07-19-2013 01:42 PM

lol I think Zora is gonna be very busy for a few days! ;)

DeepGirl 07-29-2013 11:47 AM

Tell me! Today is the last day to purchase the stuff from Silhouette America using the coupon EXCITING to get 40% off. So I bought plenty of stuff, my US friend will forward the parcel to me.

After few days being sick (bad sausage stuff at the barbecues, argh) I finally got to play with my new toy. :D I fought with the blade settings to cut some cards, but I think I have figured it out and will find some Mari's kit to use.

laceybittner 07-29-2013 01:02 PM

I LOVE my Cameo! I have not done anything with fabric as of yet but have nothing but good to say about it!

sianbb 02-28-2014 05:39 AM

I love my Cameo!!!!!!!!!!! Not cut anything other than paper at this stage as only got it for christmas. One thing I am keen to try is the stamp making material.... They are such awesome machines - the best scrapping tool I have ever bought!!!

lorryfach 02-28-2014 06:14 AM

I realize this is a really old post but I wonder if anyone has tried Make the Cut software with their Silhouette? I keep thinking about getting it. It has layers which would be nice but I'm still not sure if I want to spend on it. http://www.make-the-cut.com/

fifilur 02-28-2014 07:21 PM

I've been thinking about getting another software as well. I'm not completely "friends" with silhouette studio, so haven't gotten DE. I'm just not ready to spend any on any program right now, so haven't looked into the alternatives either.

NeverendingJen 02-28-2014 07:40 PM

I got DE for christmas and I actually find it better than the basic sil studio. It's still not as intuitive as photoshop, but 7 years of PS/PSE kind of can't compare to a year in sil studio.

zakirahzakaria 02-28-2014 08:27 PM

I'm so jealous of you ladies! It must be super fun playing with the Silhouette. I'm not much of a paper / hybrid person, so getting one would mean that the machine sitting in the corner, collecting dust. But I LOVE seeing what it creates!

Heather, how does your silhouette designer edition makes the print and cut easier? I'm using my method for printing and cutting (works better than the prescribed silh. way), but I'm willing to learn if that's easier, and I have DE.

(I've been using my silhouette tons and have so much fun with it, just not getting to taking pics of my projects and posting them in the galleries!)

heathergw 04-03-2014 06:07 PM

because it allows me to use the digital papers for pattern fill. I use pattern fill a ton for print and cut... so if say I wanted a 3x4 journal card of a patterned paper, I will create my 3x4 box in Silhouette and then just drag the digital paper I want to use into the box and I instantly have a journal card made from one of the patterned papers... I've also used it when I use weld fonts for word art. I'll drag a painty paper into it to give it a painty look.

Also, if you see the newest updates to the software... I'm super excited that I can now import PDF files into the software... and you can do shadowing and some other really cool things like auto nesting to use up less space... I haven't had a chance to upgrade the software but I'm super excited about those new features too.

but really being able to open SVG files was the main reason I updated since the designers are not allowed to sell .studio files in the shoppe

suladesign 04-03-2014 06:36 PM

Thanks Heather.

And yup, the svg file feature was what made me choose to upgrade to DE. Makes things a lot easier!

And I didn't know that dragging the papers into the shape was a feature specific to DE. I just discovered it when I did my DD pages, and now I use them for my PL cards, too!

suladesign 04-03-2014 06:40 PM

Ok, I thought the shadowing was a really cool feature, but I believe my software is up-to-date, but nowhere do I find the shadowing feature. I need to go and find out more about it!

d2vasquez 04-03-2014 10:23 PM

I downloaded the update last night and can't wait to play with it!

I haven't updated yet, only because I usually wait until all the bugs have been fixed... hopefully they'll have a tutorial on the shadowing soon.

suladesign 04-04-2014 10:35 PM

Heather, the shadowing actually is pretty easy and intuitive! You can choose the distance from the original object (and I guess the direction, too), the color, and the opacity (more or less transparent). I figured this one out in no time!

I just don't see myself really using the shadowing feature a lot because doing hybrid or craft projects, the shadows come automatically (duh!) and will look natural by default (double duh!, lol). The only difference is what I saw in a tutorial not too long ago: to create shadow for text (someone did that on a chalk board background in a tutorial and I found that pretty cool, but she just used the old software, duplicated the text, recolored it etc.,) so, doing pretty much the same what the new shadowing feature can do, and it didn't take that much longer either! I guess you could do the same with any object, so really, the shadowing feature isn't that big of an improvement either.

What I really would have liked to see is some photo editing options, if only basic (like exposure [lighter, darker] etc.).
