Getting really creative with the chipboard albums...

I have a friend who is an amazing paper scrapper and designs stamps and other things for a popular new company.
And since I no longer have the mind of a scrapper (ya know I can only think all things digi) we were talking about chipboard albums and I was saying how I wish there were even more shapes available on the market. While there are quite a few, some of them don't really appeal to me.
So she mentioned to me about the shape tool in Photoshop.

DUH!!!!!

LOL
I had just gotten 8 sheets of chipboard at a closing LSS nearby for .25 a sheet and have so many ideas!
So I wanted to kind of share these with you guys.
Ebay has hella cheap chipboard (just check out this ebay search link).
If you have a 12x12 sheet of cardstock and you wanted to make a 6x6 album, you could make 4 chipboard album pages per sheet of chipboard.
So you really only need 2 chipboard 12x12 pages to make an 8 page (front and back) album.
Now as far as shapes go, check it out.
Photoshop has a teardrop (or raindrop) shape that would be AWESOME for water photos...think swimming (because warm weather is coming), a heart shape, arrow shapes of ALL sizes, cloud shapes, badge shapes, street sign shapes, thought bubble shapes, doggy print shapes (which would be more difficult but you could totally scrap the footprint part and use the toe print part as tabs)....the possibilities are endless and thinking about it gets me excited.
I would love to see if anyone would be willing to go and try some of these with me! I know there are plenty of kits in the store to go along with any of these themes.
Maybe we could have a Sweet Shoppe Hybrid group for those that want to play along, maybe we could do it once per month, with a theme and I would definately be willing to provide the templates in PNG format.
We could do it here on the board or take it to a Yahoo email group for chatting and post our stuff in the gallery.
Anyone interested?
(Hope this is ok to post, Robin!)

I am all over that one...What a great idea Mandy. I am just learning PSE now but I am sure I can figure it out n/p.....

~ashleigh 04-15-2008 12:46 PM

That is a great idea, Mandy! And I would love an opportunity to use some of the paper scrapping supplies currently gathering dust in my closet!

twentytinytoes 04-15-2008 12:47 PM

Fun!! I really want to get more into hybrid stuff but I am still waiting on my ink LOL

crecia27 04-15-2008 12:48 PM

FUN! I'm totally in!

kscwgirl 04-15-2008 12:50 PM

Mandy, that sounds awesome!! I'm in. :)

ColleenSwerb 04-15-2008 12:53 PM

Mandy you rock my socks girl! While at home and at my mom's LSS I picked up some thicker chipboard to make books with, but I totally didn't think to check ebay for some! (My LSS wanted like $1 per sheet, year right!!)

I'm totally in. I've been thinking of how to create an arrow accordian album, I think that would be super cute.

That's fine, you can still play along! I think if we do this, that we should give it a month before we start so that everyone can save a few pennies to get some kits in the store, some chipboard albums or single chipboard shipped and/or bought and everything organized.
It'll be fun!!I don't think it'll be structured, really fun and loose and not many rules other than themes.

ColleenSwerb 04-15-2008 01:00 PM

Mandy, do you think the .22 or so thickness would be good? (I'm on ebay, lol)

Shawna 04-15-2008 01:05 PM

What a fun idea Mandy! I'm definitely in! Now don't be jealous girls but my LSS sells 12x12 sheets of chipboard for only 5 cents each!!!! I stock up every time I go in! I love my LSS so they can never close down!

mel83 04-15-2008 01:06 PM

Such a great idea! I would love to play along!

Ya know, I'm not really sure about chipboard gauge. The stuff I bought the other day is pretty thin but I like it that way because the thicker the chipboard, the harder it will be to cut to shape...
You can always thicken it up if you need to by gluing 2 sheets together or using a tough hardening varnish.
I saw a chipboard book handmade at the LSS when I went that they had brushed some hard varnish stuff on and it made the pages as hard as wood. It was really very cool.

I think I might get the 6x6 sheets because that's perfect for album size BUT, I can also halve it for 3x3's for mini's or make it 1x1 for INCHIES WHICH WE WILL TOTALLY MAKE OUR THEME FOR ONE OF THE MONTHS!
Sorry, but I love inchies and I totally want to see us do those at least once.

kscwgirl 04-15-2008 01:07 PM

I was just there too and had no idea what to get. LOL Mandy......

Dude, I so should refresh before I post.....

I think I will get the .22 thickness......

ColleenSwerb 04-15-2008 01:12 PM

That's true. I never think about gluing 2 sheets together. The varnish to make it hard as wood sounds awesome!

Ok, off I go to buy some chipboard :)

PS~Inchies sounds scary to me. I can barely handle 4x6 for brag books, lol!

Mandy 04-15-2008 01:14 PM

I think my chipboard is about .40. If you can't find any that you want on ebay, Dick Blick (online) has them for .59 a sheet.

meems 04-15-2008 01:29 PM

hee hee, inchies sound so cute!

I am totally jealous, Shawna!

I might try to play . . .

would love to know what the hard as wood varnish is too.

Mandy 04-15-2008 01:55 PM

Here are inchies that my friend did.
There are various ways to do them. Scrap them, stamp them, use images, alter them, the sky is the limit and they are so cute! You can even make charms out of them!

What a cool idea!! i'll have to be on the lookout for some chipboard sheets...and i also have a ton of paper scrapping stuff, that i continue to buy on a regular basis (?) lol

OH - that would be fun to let the kids pick themes and do some "art" for their rooms!

MelissaL88 04-15-2008 02:15 PM

What an uber-cool idea, Mandy! I feel like you...doh!

meems 04-15-2008 02:18 PM

mrs_jb 04-15-2008 02:22 PM

jene 04-15-2008 04:37 PM

I would love to try this...sounds so cool plus summer is arround the corner so I will have some free time

pbumbaca 04-15-2008 06:02 PM

I didn't read through this whole thread but if you are buying the 12x12 sheets of chipboard from the LSS check out to see if they have an accu-cut machine there too. Sometimes they have good shapes that will make a great album and it cuts chipboard if it's not too thick! ;)

Angie4b1g 04-15-2008 06:18 PM

I've got about 4" worth of chipboard sheets.

My big problem is CUTTING it in anything other than a square.

Heather Roselli 04-15-2008 06:27 PM

I'm in if we can use digi supplies and print them. I don't have much paper scrap stuff left - just the stuff I buy for hybrid albums.

Absolutely Heather! That is totally what I'm going to do!
No need to get all buried in paper when we have TONS of digi supplies right at our fingertips!

ashleyprugh 04-15-2008 06:41 PM

ooooo. fun stuff.
you could also do like, an invisionfree board. make it password protected, only members being able to see it. might be easier for keeping track to stuff (i can never figure out yahoo groups. lol)
if i wasn't so busy with moving, i'd join in. maybe next month? i DO love the idea, though.

Angie4b1g 04-15-2008 07:52 PM

BTW - I'm in :)

digi-gee 04-15-2008 07:58 PM

This sounds like fun! I just pm'd you!

Amber1279 04-15-2008 10:00 PM

I am in too ... although I was honestly wondering how easy or hard it will be to cut the different shapes

ditto!

I have no idea how to cut chipboard, especially if it is meant to all be the same shape for a mini album... I can;t even cut them square, what do you gals use?

ditzyscrap 04-21-2008 08:56 AM

I'm forever trying to figure out things that I can MAKE from chipboard by cutting/folding...but never ever thought of cutting out shapes, lol. DUH! Great idea...tucking it into my idea folder... :)

For that price you should buy it all and sell it to us!!!!!!!:glare:

SamaraGugler 04-21-2008 09:05 AM

Not that I've DONE it yet, but I have a Sixxix die cutter that would be PERFECT for creating chipboard albums! We also have a big Ellison die cutter at school with even more shapes.

krystalhartley 04-21-2008 10:03 AM

I'm so doing a cloud shape one. Fantastic idea!

yep, I was wondering this too. Chipboard seems like it would be hard to cut.
