Google Reader closing July 1, 2013

Yes, I admit, I had a complete freak out when I got up this morning. :cursing: The 2nd thing I do when I sit down (after checking email), is go to my Reader.

Google closing Reader and 7 other products

I don't like keeping up with my favorite blogs on Twitter or FB because I don't track that way. Facebook doesn't update most of my liked pages on my feed - I have to do it in a list or have notifications sent...I don't get any in my feed any longer (but what's weird, my husband and son both do on the few they follow).

So...the search for a new reader. If you're using one you love..post it here, please.

So far, I'm trying Feedly, which I'm liking because it's slick, I can set it up to look like Pinterest or just do an indexed feed. It's missing a key feature for me..the ability to just click to go to the next feed the way Reader did, but I'm sure I can get over that quickly.

What about you - is there one you're using that you love?

nikkiARNGwife 03-14-2013 07:54 AM

I'm so frustrated by this. I LOVE reader..I love that I can just scroll through all of my feeds seamlessly without having to click through to anything. Ugh.

MamaBee 03-14-2013 08:04 AM

yeah... my hubby isn't happy with this, either... in the last 6 mon or so, I've gotten away from reading blogs, but when I did read them... I loved the reader, too!

Boo on you Google!

luckyme 03-14-2013 08:07 AM

Eek! I use Reader! Although I mostly read it through the Feedly service.

Stacey42 03-14-2013 08:11 AM

I've never been able to follow blogs on twitter or facebook because it requires a click to read it & that drives me nuts. I'm checking out feedly. But they get their data from Google. Most readers aggregate from google unfortunately. Feedly is supposed to be migrating to it's own servers but, I don't know... I guess I wonder how they will pay for it in the long run.

I used to use bloglines & only reluctantly switched to google because they were having issues keeping the feeds updated but that was a few years ago, I think I might check it out too.

my.yahoo has a reader as well though I have never checked it out

Penny Springmann 03-14-2013 08:23 AM

ugh.

I guess I'll start searching as well. Off to try Feedly. :)

Darcy Baldwin 03-14-2013 08:24 AM

Stracey - according to Feedly, they are already set up on their own now - but can still integrate the migration from your Feeder for awhile.

ChristyHC 03-14-2013 08:32 AM

Checking out Feedly I found this on transitioning from google reader to feedly:

DogwoodMama 03-14-2013 08:48 AM

What the heck?!?! Why? Grrr..

Nettio 03-14-2013 09:16 AM

I switched to Feedly awhile back and I love it SO much more than Google Reader. If you're a visual person it's awesome since it shows images as part of the feed titles. I still sync all my Feedly feeds from Google Reader though so I was very happy to hear they had a plan for a seamless transition. That was my first thought when I read the news "NO, what happens to Feedly??" :D I'm still shocked Google is doing away with Google Reader though - so crazy.

ETA: I should say I primarily use the Feedly app on my phone - I rarely use the web version of it.

Darcy Baldwin 03-14-2013 09:37 AM

Lynnette - from everything I was reading this morning, usage of Reader has been on a steady downturn since FB & Twitter have begun being mainstream info feeds for everyone. Google also wanted to stop spending money on applications that really weren't making them tons of money and focus on their core apps, Chrome, Android +

Nettio 03-14-2013 09:45 AM

Well considering I'd moved away from using GR other than as a sync tool at least a year ago, I can't really argue that isn't the case, haha. I was just surprised to see they're actually shutting it down. Although I'd say my reason for swtching away from GR was largely due to me hating it on mobile which I hear is part of the reason they're shutting it down so its surprising but not surprising to me either for that reason.

Here's another link: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7...-alternatives/
It's got some options for us. I'm sure once I settle on another one, I'll be fine, but I sure am kicking and screaming about losing it. I was so sad they were closing shop on iGoogle, but this is way worse.

Keely~B 03-14-2013 10:08 AM

I've been trying to make my transitions before they actually shut everything down, I used iGoogle too. I went with Feedly because I didn't have to worry about resubscribing etc. I like it so far, it's a little slow to load for me but I love the look of it.

marlathrall 03-14-2013 10:34 AM

Oh no!! I use reader all the time... You girls figure out the best option and then let me know. haha. I hate researching this kind of stuff.

MommaTrish 03-14-2013 10:51 AM

I use the Pulse app on my Kindle Fire.

Sarah8914 03-14-2013 11:16 AM

So if we switch the feedly, we shouldn't have to do anything to transition even though it pulled everything from my google reader?

Yes, they're working on their own backend replacement so everything should transfer over on it's own. This was their blog post about it: http://blog.feedly.com/2013/03/14/googleeader/

nun69 03-14-2013 01:11 PM

I have NEVER used reader (yep it's true) but I just never got the hang of it...I think somebody should do a post on how to keep up with blogs they like :) cause I relaly would like to do it, but I have never ever found a way to keep up.....

adrianka 03-14-2013 02:19 PM

I'm going to watch this thread. I'm pretty frustrated with this as well.

aly321 03-14-2013 02:52 PM

SOOOO bothered! I don't get on everyday, but love to use reader when I have some down time. I guess I will go check out Feedly too. :(

mrshobbes 03-18-2013 09:51 PM

Oh yay, thanks for the blog link, Lynnette. I've been using Feedly since last year and am very happy with it (even the iPhone app). Happy to know that they worked out a solution to make the transition seamless. I wonder why the shutdown of Google Reader, though :/

nesser1981 03-19-2013 04:34 PM

Newsify is another one, makes everything look like newspaper headlines/articles

^^^^ This :o I just downloaded Feedly and I admit that I can't even figure out how to begin :D

Milmomma 03-20-2013 02:01 PM

This makes me sad. Google Reader was my go to for blogs. I added it to my
Flipboard and could view all the blogs I stalk that way.
