Show me your categories
I was wondering how everyone classifies their kits' stash.
Show me your folders! I feel like I could use a few more categories because my life folder is bursting. https://i.imgur.com/mH6OzNE.png?3 |
Here are mine:
https://i.imgur.com/JZoG3YS.jpg General kits is for generic kits that don't really fit a specific category. Misc Themed kits are like mini golf, bedtime, skateboarding, pets, horse riding, spy kits etc. All themed kits, but I don't have enough of them to create their own folder. And my templates: https://i.imgur.com/acgAO7d.jpg (My non-SSD folder only has about 5 templates in it). |
Mine are just organized by designer and template pocket and non pocket. It’s kind of an organized mess. ;P

These are mine... I recently started sorting templates by photo spots, so that's a project in the works :)

You should do one for emotions! I recently added that category and was surprised at how many kits I have based on emotions

I don't sort by theme. I have a 'To Be Used' folder for my kits & a 'To Be Scrapped' folder for my photos & go through to pair them up every month. Once I've used a kit, it goes into a designer folder. I rarely use a kit more than once.
Good luck with your organizing! |

Mine are store-designer. |
I very rarely need to go back through my stash (unless I'm looking for specific types of elements in which case I do a term search), so I don't invest a lot of time in a very sophisticated organization system. I recently started adding tags to my kits. I do have a stash of non-kit supplies that are organized by type (including templates), but that's it.

By store then designer then kit. Unless they cross stores then that designer gets their own folder as well.
My pictures are a jumbled mess of who is that? When was that? Where was it? I've never been organized with my photos but I have tried with my purchases. I download to my phone, play with it and then upload to drop box |
For me, out of sight is out of mind. I keep all my kits together in a huge folder so that I can scroll through and see them all at once. I often use kits for off-topic layouts, so sorting by theme would mean I forgot about a lot of kits that would work for a given page. I label my kits Store_Designer_KitName, so if I'm looking for a specific kit I can find it quickly. I also have 5 subfolders where I store previews of kits for Birthdays, School, Seasons, Project Life, and Holidays. The kits themselves stay in the same big folder as all the other kits.
Templates are organized 2 ways. I have a folder of previews, and those are organized by the number of photo spots. The actual templates are organized by designer. |

I have templates in one folder and kits in another, then label each kit with tags that fit. Then I just search for whatever tag I need and get all kits or templates that fits up. Also I like to flip through my kits to see if some might fit or if I need just the right flower or something I can mix and match. If I had them in themed folders I think my brain would just forget most of the kits and I'd never use them.

I have almost 600 kits, going back to 2008...
Say whaaaaaa? Even though most of their stores have closed and designers have long retired, I have a hard time letting go (though I have done a few mass purges through the years). And, with how quickly product moves and how often designers come and go, keeping a proper organization system is a moving target. I have a hard time keeping up!! Right now I used a combo folder system and Lightroom to organize. Folders are organized by shop -> designer -> kit I keep one folder for previews and another for alpha previews. I only keep the TIFF files of templates, they are organized by designer. Then... I import all of my previews into Lightroom and organize them into smart collections. I tag each preview with relevant keywords like theme, color, major elements, etc. Templates are tagged with number of photos and single or double pages. So, if I'm looking for a travel kit, or a spatula, or a purple flower, or a single template with 6 photos, it's a breeze to find just what I need! |
I sort by Store, then Designer, then kit name. I don't put my kits into categories, but I do put all the previews into the one folder so that I can browse them easily.
|
I did a quick video over iNSD about how I tag my goodies, rather than putting everything in a different folder. I use ACDsee to tag everything. But when I download all my kits/templates to sort them, I just separate them by designer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsV3ml6rmkU&t=2s Here are the categories i use. I like to include the year that I holiday kits where purchased, so I don't overlap them too much and I've started included the year used for templates, wordart and holiday kits, because that is stuff I will reuse. http://i66.tinypic.com/2nv6n3s.jpg |
I have a file for my favorite greenery, flowers, ribbons, butterflies, alphas, and keep the rest on an external hard drive (unorganized)!

Setting up the categories is really the easy part. Since so many people shared theirs here, I'm sure you have a pretty good idea of what you'd want to start with and as you go, you can really start growing from there. I'd say, maybe a day to get a good start, templates I feel would be more time consuming. Like if you started just with the designer category, tagged every designer, then you could look click on your designer to see all of their kits/products and start creating other categories/tags from there. Like Kristin CB > Christmas > Summer > Themes > Great Outdoors, etc. Those tags you could do without ever opening the kit, once you tag the kit preview. Now, getting really specific would take time, like if you want to tag greenery, or flowers by color, alphas by color, etc. Since mine is all set up now, if I remember, when I download a new kit, when I move it to my harddrive and start tagging it, I'll tag the flowers and alphas by color and the greenery that I may use outside of that kit. |
I have one folder for kits...one.
Templates are sorted by photo quantity. Misc stuff is by category but I don't buy a lot of that. |
