tomboys....

what's another name? or names.. or something that a designer might even use as a kit title for this theme. :D:D:o:o:wub:

Neverland Scraps 05-22-2018 08:40 PM

Yikes, that's a tough one.

KristinCB 05-22-2018 08:42 PM

yikes.. as in i shouldn't go there with the kit or yikes as in.. just there isn't really another name for it? I don't want to do the wrong thing! :O

I don't really think there is a good synonym for "tomboy." I do think it would be fun to have two coordinating kits called "Something Other than Pink" and "Something Other than Blue" with a tomboy theme and a girly-boy (if that doesn't tell you something -- we have a nice word for girls who like "boy" things but no nice word for boys who like "girl" things) theme.

--says the mom who has a daughter who loves to camp & play video games and a son who loves My Little Pony & helping cook

One of my favorite synonyms for "tomboy" is spitfire. Of course, that could be because I'm a redhead... :D

What about something like "blazing your own trail" or "doing it your way"?

SeattleSheri 05-23-2018 01:23 PM

Most of the synonyms are not particularly flattering ... sigh

oh you are correct, although I do like hellion. . . . .that may have described a certain someone I know very well when she was young *cough cough* :o

Keely~B 05-23-2018 03:15 PM

"Tomboy" has always rubbed me the wrong way but I'd never get worked up over it. I prefer descriptions like unlimited, boundless, unrestricted, free. ( I'm one of those cinnamon rolls > gender roles types though. )

Kim Mauch 05-23-2018 03:18 PM

My daughter is a total tomboy, but I never use that term. Agree with others that it could be perceived wrong. It's just who she is. We like to say "You Do You", which I think would be the perfect name for this type of kit. ;)

Super thrilled that you are making this, Kristin!

Kim Mauch 05-23-2018 03:32 PM

Just wanted to add I would love to see wordstrips for "adventurous", "athletic", "brave", "smart", etc.

Love this!

Leablahblah 05-23-2018 06:51 PM

"let them be free" "let them play"
"don't tell me what I like" "don't tell me what I can play with"
"clothes have no gender" "toys have no gender"

Super excited for a kit in this theme too! I don't like the overly pink fashion for my girls...

I like "you Do you" that Kim mentioned above too

I like the word Moxie. Maybe using a word for spunky or adventurous as well instead of labeling someone as an atypical male or female.

KristinCB 05-23-2018 09:14 PM

LOOOOVE moxie! i think that's perfect! i'm hoping to have this one in the next couple weeks <3

kendallt 05-24-2018 09:02 AM

There used to be a clothing catalog in the 90's called Moxie Girl. Anyone remember that??

Leablahblah 05-24-2018 04:51 PM

Also the term is French is "garçon manqué" for tomboy and "fille manquée" for the other way around. It means a failed boy or failed girl.

chinagrrl 05-25-2018 04:15 PM

i used to have a blog for my daughter when she was little and i called it "pretty without pink".

Sounds like a perfect kit that I have to have.

My 3 girls love to wear dresses and bling as much as they love the dirt/mud/cars and video games. In other words, they are kids being kids. :)

AshleyMilfd 05-27-2018 11:15 AM

I don't have a name for it. I just call my mudpie princess lol

JennNtheBoys 05-27-2018 12:43 PM

I can't think of any other word or phrase to replace 'tomboy'..... the only thing that comes to mind for a name would be "I Can Too" or "Girls Can Too"..... something along those lines.

auntb 05-28-2018 10:40 AM

I just joined but had to weigh in here. In the UK, and other places I think, the term 'Ladette' is used a lot. I think it perfectly describes a fiery girl who loves boy activities.

lovely1m 05-31-2018 05:43 PM

I love that idea, LeeAndra. And you are totally right there is no word for boys who prefer traditional girly things.

Nixenkind 06-01-2018 01:17 AM

I have a boy who loves pink, but not necessarily girly things - he isn't into princesses or unicorns, but into boyish stuff that happens to be pink. I would so love to have a kit for him!
