My first engagement ring was a cheapo fake, and I didn't marry him.
Then when my husband and I got together we were poor, and he got me a mini midget diamond in silver setting. And we got matching tatinum bands to wear. He still wears his. But they can't be sized and my hands just keep changing size with kids, and surgeries and weightloss. So we upgraded mine about 3 years ago. Around our 4th yr anniversary. I picked out what I wanted and he just said okay.
After all I'm the one wearing it. I'd like to upgrade his but with his job he said he'd rather not. So instead we are saving for our honeymoon for our 10 year anniversary.
