Baby Derek was in the hospital

Hi ladies,

What a year already! I will be so glad when January is over!!! Our 2 month old got sick before Christmas and was admitted into the hospital last week because he wasn't gaining weight and projectile vomiting. I feel so out of the loop because I was at the hospital with him 24/7......I have really missed SSD and scrapping!!!!

But Baby Derek is FINALLY home! This has been a long, scary week...well, I guess the last month b/c I knew something was not right with him for a while now and we just couldn't figure out what was wrong.

We still don't have definite answers but they are thinking he had a horrible viral infection that peaked at the same time his GERD did. It's been a long road....a scary one and we weren't sure of the outcome.

Derek was labeled, just a week ago, "failure to thrive" because he wasn't gaining weight. He didn't have any outward signs of anything wrong except for constant vomiting during feedings, that came and went from day to day, but all the tests came back that everything was fine....there was nothing wrong internally.

He had ultrasounds and an upper GI series...all came back normal. He had blood test after blood test...the only thing that was elevated were his liver enzymes. He was tested for cystic fibrosis as well...needless to say...I was scared about losing my baby boy. I tried to stay positive and pray that everything was going to be ok...it was so hard keeping the faith though. I watched and cried as my baby boy became a lab rat while they tried to figure out what was going on with him.

We started out in one hospital and ended up at another hospital...a Children's hospital that had specialized GI doctors. Derek and I were transferrred by ambulance as Tim followed behind in the truck....Tim almost had to pull over several times b/c he was so scared of losing our baby and broke down while driving....he said he started bawling when he was putting an empty car seat in the truck and it went downhill from there...but he knew he had to stay strong for me and had to pull himself together before we arrived at the new hospital.

Derek got to come home Tuesday afternoon...after he had a few days of no throwing up, a few days on his new medicine and had two successful weight gains! He gained three ounces in less than two days at the new hospital!!! We almost had a party at that moment...up until that first weight gain...he has lost a few ounces since his 2 month DA the week before.

I am HAPPY to report that Derek is doing awesome now! He has gained 5 ounces in less than two days....almost triple the recommended weight gain! He has turned in to a little piglet...eating 4 ounces at every feeding!!!!! Yay!!!!! I am sure the weight gain is going to level off and won't be so rapid but for now he knows he has a lot of catching up to do! LOL He barely spits up and is a VERY happy baby once again!

I can't wait to open up and start scrapping again now that things are finally getting back to normal. I can't wait to see the challenges for February since I haven't gotten any done for January yet!!!!!

I feel for you.... the first few years of ce's life were pretty scary. Lots of similar experiences.. failure to thrive being thrown at us repeatedly. Lil ones are amazing though.. their strength to pull through is astounding :] I'm so glad he got to come home!

Derek was diagnosed with GERD too but thankfully the meds and special formula are working!!!

OH, we've been there and it is so scary! (((HUGE HUGS))) and so glad he's doing better. Moriah lost 1lb between her 4 month and 6 month appt and was finally diagnosed with silent reflux after all the testing and stuff. I still remember how horrible it was going thru that and can so relate to what you went through. So glad he's doing better and catching up on the weight gain.

I'm glad to hear that things are leveling back out for you guys. How scary!
My niece had HORRIBLE reflux when she was born. Everything she ate she threw up...and I mean EVERYTHING. I got used to having baby throwup as my perfume. lol She is still pretty tiny for being 19 months old but she started gaining weight and leveling out around 12 months.

I will keep you guys in my prayers for continuous strength and healing.
