Making ice cream in a bag...
One of our Summer Of Fun things is to make ice cream but we don't have an ice cream maker...does this work? |

Back in high school in English class we had to do demos and my cousin did this, but she instead of the outside plastic bag, she used a coffee can... and then she had a group of people sit on the floor and kick it back and forth... yes, it did work!

I've tried both. I found ice cream in a can more successful. I would recommend the can way because your boys might find it more fun. I had my nephews sit under a tree in the yard and they rolled the can back and forth to each other to make the ice cream. Good memories.

oh yeah... that would totally work... you're just doing the work that the ice cream machine does... it'll be tons of fun for the boys to shake!!!

Yup, I've done it using cans too You just keep rolling it around for a while, I bet the boys would find it fun (as long as they aren't drop kicking the cans, LOL!).

Yep. We did it on a field trip with Noah's class last year to the corn maze. It's very very yummy.

Love this thread!! I am definitely making ice cream the next day we have warm weather (which I have no idea when will be because of our unpredictable weather here in Norway... Grrr!)
And frozen bananas, we do this in the preschool I work as a yummy treat for the kids, bananas on a stick, put it in the freezer and it's so yummy!

The boys did the bag version at school & it worked fine.
We did ice cream in a bag in a can at home. We didn't have two cans that would fit inside one another so we put a gallon sized bag of ice cream ingredients inside the can with the rock salt & ice. The boys found it easier to roll the can than shake the bag |

Coldstone's works too. Then they can "watch" it being made. Defeats the purpose i know ...

Looks like you had fun and got some great pics from it! So funny that you did this just now as my son's summer camp did this with all their kids today. They each had their own bag and had a ball making it - they flavored with mms.

Traci, you're super creative with these things, and if you don't already do it, I have a great winter idea for you!
Every year, we make Snow Ice Cream! You have to wait until the second snow of the year (it's cleaner... not kidding)... but you go out to a clean patch of snow, and scoop some up. Add milk, vanilla extract, and sugar to taste, and mix it together. Easy, cheap, and delicious.

cute photos! Did ice cream in a can for summer school chemistry in high school. It might work better with metal cans since metal is a temperature conductor. we just rolled it back and forth on the lab tables. It was good. Someone forgot to seal the inner can good. Salty ice cream. Total ick.

Hey Traci.... you should create a kit based off of your summertime activities... Ice cream, pancakes, water balloons, chalk... you know, to go with those templates everyone is trying to talk Cindy into making Someone else said they were doing watermelon, roller coasters....
:: cough ::

I think that kit would be great. You could call it Summer Fun.
What else do you have on your list of fun things this summer?
