Default Jeff's surgery

Surgery is Thursday at 1 pm. It is a 2-5 hour surgery.

He is now freaked out b/c he has to have an epidural that will remain in for up to 4 days.. and b/c the anesthesiologist he met with told him that it's one of the most painful surgeries they perform. Seriously? And you would do that because why?

Anyway... I will update y'all when I can.

oh boy...i guess you can appreciate his honesty, if anything??
Reasure him that there are many, many, effective drugs for pain, and they wont make him suffer without them!! I am sure the nurses will take good care of him after the surgery....

Sara,
Tell him not to worry about the epidural, Keira had one from Thursday-Monday after she had the tumor on her liver removed. It didn't bother her at all and really helped with her pain control.

She was able to walk with it too.

He's only freaked about the epi b/c of 2 things... he watched them give me mine w/ abby and almost passed out and this man is not afraid of needles

and he's not happy about the catheter. Men are so sensitive about their parts.

Can't blame him for either fear. Neither of those things is fun by any means.

OH man...why would someone say that?? Hoping he comes through with flying colors. Blessings to you both.

I will add, from my experience, that there were somethings they didn't tell me. I think it was partly ignorance on my part, so I didn't know to ask. I had never had surgery before, I don't know anything about hospitals. Let alone what an open wound would mean and how long it would take that to heal. And yeah...it's a SERIOUS eye opener. Put's the fear of God into you. But there is no point in just freaking someone out for no good reason. Yeah, sure, it's gonna hurt. Let's talk about something positive!

awww... that would totally be Mark too

You guys will be in my thoughts and prayers... I wish I could drive down there to keep you company while waiting, I put it in my calendar to remember to have YIM on too if you need someone to chat with... do you have someone waiting in the waiting room with you while you wait? I know that was a huge help to have a friend with me when Isaac had his surgery and Mark was home sick with Moriah.

Oh and I would be terrified of an epi too...which is why I had 4 all natural births!!! The idea of that going in my back....NO THANKS!!! I feel for your DH!!!! I can't believe the doc would tell him all that!!!

When I had my procedures last week they had to stick me in both wrists to get my IV started....it was a good thing that my DH was out in the waiting room while they prepped me for surgery b/c he would have passed out!! LOL

Did they say how long recovery would take?

I'm so glad that you'll have family with you.

He'll be in the hospital up to 10 days depending on how much of his lung they have to take out and how quickly he gets up and around.

He'll be off work for 2-3 months... so.. a while.

It's that off work part that has me a little worried about handling things but.. what can I do lol

They did Keira's in the OR, after they got her off to sleep with something via IV, and they did her catherter then as well. That didn't stay in as long as her epidural did. So maybe they can do that for him! I'm not sure if they did that for her since she was so young or what. The epi was for pain management after the surgery.

Sending prayers for you guys!

I was completely freaked out about having a spinal with my c-sections but I hardly felt it at all. And with both of my csections they did the catheter AFTER I was numb from the spinal so maybe they can do that for him. ???? Never hurts to ask.

Will keep you guys in my prayers.

He will probably be thankful for the epidural but, yeah, seeing it done I think is worse than having it done. My grandma had a lot of problems after her epidural (she had back pain from the time it was removed until she passed away 7 years later, again, unrelated to the lung cancer) but she also had osteoporosis and a slight case of scoliosis which were really the contributing factors. My step-FIL had no problems with his during the same surgery.

The catheter... I can relate to that. I absolutely hate those things. I mean, I can't imagine much that is worse. After having terrible issues with catheters during 2 of my deliveries I BEGGED them to do the epidural on the 3rd before the catheter. The nurses were reluctant and kept saying they just didn't do it that way but the doctor was on my side and they did the epidural first which made the catheter a lot easier. The first two times I had a catheter I had so much pain, pressure, and eventually infections and they had trouble getting them in and keeping them in too.

speaking only from experience, I would much rather have an epidural than a catheter put in...my husband totally agrees with me (he's had both too), so what I did last time is I refused the catheter until the epidural was in and had numbed me! LOL. I'm the biggest baby there is! I watched my husbands spinal tap in January, and I now know that there is no way I'd do it without being numb. He handled it ok, but he said he wouldn't do it again. He's much more tolerant of pain than I am.

I will be driving that morning...for about 4 hours, so I will be lifting you guys up in prayer during my drive.

I'll be thinking of you and your family! As for telling him it's one of the most painful surgeries, really? He just didn't need to know that. If they really needed to tell him, at least they could have given it a positive spin, like "It's a painful surgery, but you don't need to worry because we're very good at controlling pain through x, y, z." I hope they're able to keep him comfortable over the next few months as he recovers.
