Default QOTD - When I Grow Up... - 11.10.15

What did you want to be when you grew up? Did that end up being your job? If it's not your current job, do you like your current job better? Would you go back and change things if you could?

I wanted to be a writer and a mom. I am both... although there's a whole lot more emphasis on the moming part vs. the writing part at the moment.

As a kid I wanted to be a scientific journalist...then I hit middle school and started getting C's in science, so I had to abandon that plan...

I ended up with a degree in financial planning, but other than our personal life, I don't use that much either.

Dream job...it would actually be a series of small part-time jobs: writing, speaking, ministry, photography... We'll see...

I always wanted to be a mum. Right from my earliest recollection. I thought a nurse was probably the closest thing to being a mum, so I pursued a medical career. I ended up being an Army medic, and LOVED it. Really really loved it. When the time came to step down from that and become a full time mum 15 years later, I loved that even more. Being a mum is the best thing ever. Now my girls are 9 and 12, I work 20hrs a week as a teacher aide at the local kindergarten. It's super easy, and not awfully challenging, but I work with a neat group of ladies, and I'm able to be home with the kids when they're home, with term breaks off too.

I honestly wouldn't change a thing about my career choices.

When I was a kid, I once wanted to be a doctor and then, I broke my elbow once and had to have some surgeries and decided I didn't want to be a doctor.
Growing up later, I had a dream of becoming a scientist who works in company like NASA... but that hasn't happened yet. Well, I'll say I am kind of halfway and had to quit because the study took too much toll on me...

And now, I am a mommy... It's an up and down day-to-day thing for me but, I'm enjoying it. Loving the fact that my hubby lets me to spend so much time with our son while he is growing up

Thinking back on it, I never had a big burning desire to be/do any one thing... except be a rock star when I was young - LOL

I always loved science and math so I went to college and majored in biochemistry which I loved. After I graduated I married my Marine and started a life of moving all over the place, which I actually didn't mind so much. I was happy raising our son and doing different part-time jobs - some having to do with science some not.

Then due to life circumstances I suddenly found myself having to work full time as a single parent of a teen and a toddler and fell into the job of medical transcriptionist - it has worked out so well because it has allowed me to make a decent living while being able to work around my kids' schedules. It's allowed me to use my science knowledge and best of all I've been able to be there for all my kids' events - school, sports, and social. So it's been a win-win situation. Once Cheyanne leaves the nest I may seek out something else but for now I'm happy

I wanted to be a singer, but I can't sing, LOL! So that wasn't in the cards. It think that's a big requirement. LOL!

I honestly wanted to be a photographer as I became a teenager. And, yes I'm happy to report I am one. Thanks to the GI Bill and the Air Force, I got my Associates Degree in Photographic Technology, I finished school in 2014, but I've been working as a photographer for 5 years now.

What a fun question! I wanted to be an 'author of children's books'. That is what is our 6th grade class yearbook says. I used to copy my picture books word for word and staple them into my own book, so I felt like I created something. I tried to write my own books (like, when I was in the 2nd grade, lol!) but I was a perfectionist and could never finish them.

Now I want to be a social worker and next year, when I'm done homeschooling Eden, I want to finish my degree. I still crave creative projects though.

I went through a lot of desires... as a child - nurse, teacher, accountant (a boy I liked wanted to be one)...

In 9th grade, I wanted to be a teacher... then I taught Sunday School and had a rowdy class and was told because I wasn't a mom, I had no purpose teaching. In 10th/11th grade, I was obsessed with "Unsolved" Mysteries and wanted to work in the Crime Lab... but there were like no openings and my parents wouldn't let me go to downtown Milwaukee for college. 12th grade, I decided on going for Paper Science (Chemical engineer for the paper industry)... did that my first year in college, realized that Science/Math was no my strong suit... Changed to business, but found that boring... so went for computers and communication and became a Corporate Computer Trainer. I loved, loved, loved that job... I became a resources manager and loved that even more... but now I'm a mom and homeschool... so I guess now that I'm a mom, I can teach...

If I had to go back into the workforce... I have no idea what I want to be when I "grow up"...

I wanted to be a librarian or own my own bookstore, anything to do with books. I ended up getting a degree in psychology & sociology with emphasis on research. After we relocated, I'm doing PT sales while trying to find a new career path. No clue what I'm going to do next.

I wanted to be an astronaut at one stage... clearly didn't happen. Towards the end of high school I got this idea of doing accounting, which I did... but I hated that eventually. Now I work in environmental protection which is much more satisfying.

In no particular order I wanted to be a zoologist, a veterinarian, an astronaut, a mommy, a taco bell employee, an artist and a rock star. I'm happy that a couple of my dreams came true. And even happier a few didn't! Haha. Taco Bell was seriously my dream at 6.

For as long as I could remember I wanted to be a Marine Biologist - to be able to work with dolphins (which as a child/teenager I hada deep obsession for, kind of still do) Dophins are my happy place. I also remember wanting to go to a well know college a couple states away for Photography after I visited a cousin who was going there for photography. I still would love to do the photography, just cannot find a decent place to go to that isn't way too expensive. I can remember growing up and my mom working in a photography shop and going to work with her and it was just amazing and fond childhood memories!

My now real "grown up" job is a medical transcriptionist, which I just kind of fell into because it is what my mom went back to college for once I started school. It's definitely not something I would have said hey - I want to go to school to do this but it makes a decent living and I can work from home, in a hospital or in a doctor's office - which I currently do, but have kind of merged 2 jobs into one - I am now a "unofficial" MOA / Nurse / go to girl for a private practive doctor which I totally did not see myself doing, but I like the variety and at least it is never a boring day working with Medicare aged elderly people who cannot see or hear half the time.

I would love to go back to college and at least finish a degree so I can say - I did it and feel that I accomplished something!

I always wanted to be a mom. Other than that, I wanted to be a teacher when I "grew up". Then I realized that I have zero patience. When I was a teenager, I had a bunch or dental work done...braces, oral surgery, etc. Some was good and some was bad. Dental hygiene started to intrigue me. I went to night school my senior year to become a certified dental assistant. I was going to do that for a while then go back to become a dental hygienist. I married, worked as DH was going to school, then had my first baby. We decided I'd stay at home so i've been "momming" ever since.

I LOVED my job in the dental office. I did a little of everything...front office, insurance work, assisting dentist & hygienists, new patients, consults, whitening, lab work, etc. The work was demanding but I loved the relationship I had with coworkers & patients. I loved being to help people with cosmetic work, calming children down, etc. It was a great job. I'd love to get back into when my kids are older. We'll see

You should definitely be a writer! You have a gift for it!

I wanted to be Vanna White when I was in elementary school. : )

I wanted to be a teacher & a mom, but turns out I suck at both of them.

Teaching was the most exhausting thing I've ever done; turns out I like kids but not 20 of them at once. If I could go back, I'd love to be a literacy specialist; when we lived in Malaysia, I taught older kids who had never learned to read. It made me really interested in the whole process of learning, and I'd love to work one on one with kids.

And being a SAHM is pretty exhausting, too. I'm not a self-starter, so although I have big ideas about teaching Ari at home, I never can get my act together to make it happen. And playing tea party and Barbies isn't fun for me, though I know it is a blessing to get to be a part of her everyday life.

Up until beginning of 2010 I was going to do nursing but didn't get accepted but now that I'm 99.9% finished my degree in Disability Studies I'm glad I did change. If I had a perfect job right now it would be working in the field of my degree probably in a service delivery role or advocacy role but I'm realistic that it may take awhile. I've already been turned down for a government department job but am working on my application for a complaints assessor for the national health & disability commission. In the future though I'd love to get into policy work and research.

I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid. When I went to college, I wanted to be an architect and it was my original major. I am neither of those, instead I am in the Air Force. I still love everything to do with space, but it was not too likely I would do that. I do wish I had stuck with architecture. I still love it.

from the time I was 12 I wanted to be a Psychologist and I still wish I could be. I'd settle for something lower on the totem pole but in the same field at this point in my life.

All I ever wanted to be was a mom. I ended up being an editor for 10 years before the mom thing finally happened. I loved being an editor. I was good at it. Motherhood has been the biggest challenge of my life, by far. I'm not very good at it. But, I love my kids, and I'm soooo grateful that I've been blessed with the opportunity to be a mom.

I'm still waiting for the "when I grow up" thing to happen. I'm not convinced it ever will.

Wen I was young I wanted to be a psychologist I ended up being a massage therapist and Reiki practitioner. In hindsight I realize that is kind of like being a psychologist for the physical body. Right? Also a mommy, I always wanted to be a mom. I have 5 amazing children!

I just wanted to be a mom. Then a teacher told me I *had* to be something, that being a mom didn't count. So I drew from the air and decided I'd be a child psychologist. That seemed kinda close to being a mom. By the time I graduated, I had decided to go into elementary education. Again, kinda like being a mom (so much more than I ever thought, really!). After learning more about the politics of education I changed my mind and switched to a double major in business administration and accounting.

Through all of this, I really felt like I was being drawn towards being an artist in some capacity. I couldn't put my finger on what I wanted to do exactly, but I wanted my job to reflect my passions.

Then I became a mom. I stayed home with my kids from the time I was first pregnant until my youngest started kindergarten. During this time I also found digital scrapbooking and became a designer. I really thought I had found my niche... BUT, when my youngest started kindergarten I was offered a job while at a PTO meeting. One thing led to another and I started with the school district.

I'm now in a position that I LOVE. My official title is technology aide but I do a whole lot more including teaching reading intervention groups and substituting for teachers as needed. I'm also the cashier at lunch time and the yearbook coordinator as well as the box tops person. I do a little bit of everything around there and I love it! I get to be creative. I get to work with kids. I have the same hours/days that my kids do. I also get to work with technology which became an interest of mine along the way. I use a little of everything I have dabbled in over the years while I am at work. It's a pretty good gig... if only it paid more, I'd be set. Thank goodness I'm not working for the money!

I wanted to be a teacher and archaeologist in high school. I think really just wanted to be Indiana Jones. I ended up being an attorney representing a government agency. I decided in college that I didn't want to be a teacher because I would yell at the kids. I went to law school to get into politics and I don't want anything to do with it. I would like to do something creative at some point again.
