Default I'm nosey

random (ish) question:
when using a template, do you go in order of the layers when you're placing items or do you do all the papers first, then the elements, etc.?

Delete all element placeholders... put in photos... then do papers... finally elements.

I'm usually a go in order kinda gal, BUT, lately I've been placing all the papers, then the elements, then title work/journaling. It honestly never occurred to me to go "out of order."

I obviously tend to follow directions

I always do photos first, then papers, then elements. The photos are the focus of my pages so I gotta make sure they go in first.

Delete layer styles (shadows, I prefer to do my own), delete element placeholders. Add photos. Start with papers from background up. Add title and journaling and elements. Do my own shadowing. Save for web action.

The only thing I always do is place photos first, otherwise I'm all over the place. Sometimes paper first, sometimes elements. Sometimes I delete everything but photo place holders and sometimes not.

I start with papers, photo area without adding photos. Then I add my elements, title work and whatnot. Last, I get my photos and add journaling.

Papers, elements and then photos. I hide the element placeholders one by one as I top them with an element. I don't delete layers. But I do fully trim papers now rather than just clipping them and leaving them as 12x12s. Saves on file space this way.

My template process:
  • Resize entire template (or just specific pieces), shift everything, group layers and/or flip items to my preference
  • Save and rename file: date_kitname_templatename
  • Apply my own layer styles to papers and adjust the angle
  • Background paper
  • All other papers
  • Elements
  • Photos
  • Title
  • Journaling (very rarely applicable)

I just Artisan 5, so I'm not sure the difference, but I always put photos in first, then whatever feels right. Usually the background paper is next, but sometimes I do that last. I love to layer on the ellies, so I just wing it!

I delete all elements (frames, scalloping etc included) and then go in order upwards, placing elements last

Just out of curiosity, why do so many people delete the elements? Do you just not find their placement useful? Too many layers?

I almost never do it the same. I try to do a background paper first, but sometimes I want to put on some elements (especially like...ribbons or more flat elements that lay directly against papers, so I can see how patterns/colors work together when I am adding papers). When I add my photos depends somewhat on if I am finding photos to match a kit, or a kit to match photos (and yes, I must always have them matching - if a photo is b/w, it means it didn't match - lol!). I generally don't delete element layers until I've put something in that place, but I sometimes add extra layers or move them around. Sometimes I do some papers, then some elements, and then the rest of the papers. I'd probably drive someone nuts trying to watch me scrap.

I don't delete them all, but I often thin them out and shrink them. My final layout might have a cluster made of 2 flowers, one piece of foliage, and a button--the template version of that is usually 15 layers and takes up a lot more space than I'd give a cluster.

not useful at all.
Usually too many elements and I do mine according to my kit.
Hate flowers and leaves, so almost never use them
Unless there is an extra special element, all the flowers, leaves dots etc are a waste of space for me

I always gut templates pretty badly when I use them and get rid of all the elements. So then I put the papers all on and add the elements after that.

I'm usually all over the show and never follow a set pattern, but the one thing I always do is place my photos first. Overlays/paint are usually last (I delete any paint/overlays in the template at the beginning), along with my own shadows. I always do my shadowing once my layout is complete.

I always start with photos; photos to me is the key of the page so I start with that. Usually move to the paper and then lastly the elements however I have been known to go back and change out the papers if my first try is a no go after I have the elements I want.

It intrigues me to read that people do everything then add their photo -- my question is do you already know the photo you want to use and design the paper around it?

For me, it's photos -> papers -> elements -> journaling. I also love to hide the templates' layers, and then do 'Delete all hidden layers' from the Layers menu. Saves time & document file size.

Photos first then I work upwards from background paper, deleting things as I go.
I might need to try zakirah's trick there...

It doesn't surprise me that I'm the odd one! I usually do elements that includes deleting any layers I don't want or need, papers, photos, then title/journal/date. I can't choose my papers until I see what my elements look like. I usually do have the photo I plan to use edited and ready I just don't place it until after my page is almost ready.

I delete the elements because I'm usually into big huge clusters that templates don't generally have.

I do however struggle with scrapping boyish layouts so if I have one for a CT that I'm have trouble with, I'll go with the same element placement.

Unless I'm working with a themed kit (where I actually plan to use the theme, which is not usually the case), I generally haven't picked out my photo(s) in advance. I may have an idea of a certain set of photos I want to pull from, but that's about as close to I get. I know most people scrap for their pictures, but I confess, that I scrap because I like the process of building the page and it's a bonus that at the end of the day, I get to show off some photos too!

Like Zakirah, I also hide the layers after I've "used them" and then delete all of my hidden layers with the "delete hidden layers" feature in PS when I'm ready to close everything.

I delete everything but the paper & photo layers (sorry, Brooky!) and then it's a toss up. If there are a lot of paper layers, I will do those first and then elements. If it is a simpler template, I will start by making some element clusters first.

I usually place photos last-ish (with journaling ALWAYS last) but it depends on the kit, theme, etc.

I tend to insert my photos, then papers and elements, followed by journalling last. Shadow as I go along.
