Default Training Wheels??

What age did your child or children get their training wheels taken off? or did they just go straight to bike.

My dd was 5. But in our street there are 2 boys riding without training wheels and they are only 3 and 4, so I guess we were late.

My dd was 4. She was having a heck of a time trying to pedal with them, so we took them off as well as the pedals. She practiced balancing and coasting for a few days before we put the pedals back on... then she took off down the sidewalk like a pro

Our DD is 5 and I am thinking we might try this.

Landen just learned a few weeks ago and he is 7. He was never interested so we just went by his lead...He is a pro already...so without a doubt it was time.

Keira learned last week, she's 7. But we had to wait for the chemo to get out of her system. It messed with her balance. She's not great yet, still needs to work on control and stopping, but she's getting there.

After she's pretty good, we're going to take Cooper's off, he's 4, but I think he's fearless, which will help him I think. LOL!

Erica - my boys are like that, too - and neither of them care enough to really try. They haven't really figured out the freedom having a bike will give them.

Both of mine were 6, I think. DD was closer to 7. They didn't have a good place to learn until we moved here. DS was perfectly happy with the training wheels for the longest time. He just learned in April to ride without them. We, too, took off the pedals for a while. We also got a Balance Buddy and used it with DS. We also got him a new bike for Christmas that we refused to put training wheels on so he had to learn to ride before he could use the new one.

I was 10, almost 11 by the way. I was so afraid of my bike it wasn't even funny. We moved and there was a neighbor boy who was my age. He rode his bike all the time. He got me to ride on the back of it with him. Before long I was zipping through obstacle courses and race tracks that we made out in the desert. That was a fun summer!

My oldest was .... around 7 and a half I think. We were gonna try earlier and just never got to it (we were moving and a few other things just kept us from it). We finally took them off, and I swear he was riding like a pro within a couple days. I was shocked how quickly he got it!!

My kids had scooters before bikes but neither used training wheels. I taught myself to ride a bike by riding down a road that had a slight slope so I could concentrate on steering and balance. My son learned to ride early but it took him awhile to learn to brake though. My daughter was probably 7 or 8 and my youngest well he took quite awhile to learn. Maybe 10 or 11? Oh and no training wheels for him either.

Sean was 6 and he'd had the training wheels on for a good two years at that point. He actually let our neighbor take them off one day, and he was riding like a pro within an hour. But, he's one of those kids that takes a long time to care about stuff, and then once he does, it's off to the races. It's been that way with almost everything in his life since he was 18 months old.

My Ian has yet to really care about pedaling on anything, including a tricycle. And, he's 5 now. So, who knows how long it will be before he's riding a two-wheeler without training wheels. And, we have 3 and 4 year olds in our neighborhood riding around on two wheels as well. Every kid is different.

My oldest just got them removed at 7.
Middle DS got them removed at the same time. He was 5.
Youngest DS is 4 and I'm seeing that we will probably remove the this summer.

DD just turned 8 and we pretty much had to make her do it. I think she would have kept them forever if we would have let her.

I am thinking of taking off his training wheels once he gets out of school in June, he is hauling butt on his training wheels.

My 5 year old just started riding without her training wheels. It took her a bit to get the confidence to do it, but once she figured out she could do it, she's been unstoppable.

DD1 and DS were both 5 when they started riding a 2-wheeler. DD2 was maybe 6?

This thread makes me feel a bit better about my girls age and still having training wheels. They will be 7 in August, and they just got their bike with training wheels for their 6th bday... We rode around a bit last fall, but not too much. I'm the one holding them back. They want to ride all the time, though they don't realize that one day the training wheels will come off and they'll have to balance themselves. I've told dh that he's going to be the one who has to do it. I'm terrified I'll see blood when the training wheels come off. I can't handle that AT ALL. I would freak - the littlest thing twists up my stomach. And little Chloe's broken her collar bone twice just from tripping and falling to the ground. Dh is always the calm one, so it's his job

I really wanted a balance bike for my kiddo, but ended up with a bigger bike and training wheels. I'm still debating whether I should keep practicing with him with the training wheels on or just take them off and let him try without it. I think I'm leaning more towards keeping then on and practice without training wheels next summer!? My son turned 4 last month.
