Default soundproofing..

out of curiosity has anyone here ever had a room in their home done with soundproof drywall or something to dampen noise?

I really really want to do our bedroom with this but it is a pricey cost so just curious if anyone here has had it done and if it made a worthwhile difference..

I'm no help with this, but I wanted to say that someone needs to invent a way to soundproof my brain. I bet you would like that too, KCB, right?

Hubby's TV room is soundproofed. It was a big selling feature when we bought the house. He watches his movies with the sound quite high, so having it sound proofed is great. The only thing is, is that the walls and ceiling have the sound proof gib, but the doors don't. They're just regular hollow core doors, and I can still hear the noise through them sometimes. The builders obviously skimped in that area. It only bothers me now and then, but not enough to do anything about it.

We do notice the difference having the walls soundproofed though.

OMG this made me laugh because growing up my parents "sound-proofed" our bedrooms with shag carpet squares on the walls Mine was red. They said it cut down on sound and also we could hammer anything we wanted into those walls since the holes couldn't be seen.

What do you do in that bedroom KCB that it needs soundproofing? Just kidding. This post just struck me as funny.

We have old horsehair plaster walls that are soundproof. It does make a difference as long as the doors are closed. I'm not sure if the modern stuff is better, but you'll have to invest in command strips because nails won't go in and drilled screws are hard to hang pictures on, thus I haven't really switched them out since I hung them up 4 years ago...

We don't need in our house, but I had a co-worker who lives in a condo and had it done. It was around $10k to have the ceiling sound-proofed so the unit above her wouldn't be as noisy. I'm kind of cheap, so that seemed pretty expensive to me.

course.. i'm guessing with it being the ceiling and her entire condo it probably was quite a large area to cover?

There are couple ways to do it. One is to buy sound proofing wall board (I think it's just a bit thicker) and then nail it up. This still carries sound through the joists to the room. I personally don't think this is very worth it.

The other way (which we did with an apartment that was part of our church) was to get special brackets that suspend the wallboard from the ceiling. This did the best job. We had no problem with hearing noise in the upper apartment. I would ask for this type of soundproofing.

I'm not totally sure if she had the entire condo sound-proofed or just her bedroom. Her condo was less than 1,000 sq ft, so not a large space. I don't have a good concept of what goes into sound-proofing. I absolutely think you could probably have it done much cheaper!

Also...one of the other gals mentioned doors. We had SOLID core doors put inside our new house and boy does that make a HUGE difference with sound in the house itself. Not sure if it would really help with a neighbor though...

And another thought.......

I had a neighbor once that used that blow in insulation and blew it inside the wall that was between him and a neighbor. That really helped too.

our walls are SO thin in our house.. we are in a single family home but sometimes it almost seems like we're in an apartment that is how easy the sound travels.. I guess might as well just call someone and get a quote and ideas on what he thinks the best solution would be..

the insulation idea would also help keep your house warmer, and since you live in a cold zone, it would probably help your heating costs too.

I'd look at insulation. I live in a manufactured home and our neighbors are quite close and we never hear anything because our walls are insulated so well. Plus, it might cut down on energy bills.

You could add more insulation when you do your siding! Just a thought....
