I'm directly in Sandy's path
Hey all,
I'm in NYC and right in Sandy's path. We are stocked up on non perishables as best we can be and I'm still going to try to hit the grocery store later for more. Kids schools are closed tomorrow and so is DH's work. We're still waiting to hear about my office. NYC transit system and railroad will shut down by 7pm. Any good thoughts and prayers welcomed. My anxiety has kicked into overdrive.

I hope you all will be safe!!! You will be in our prayers, definitely! I sure know what it feels like to have a hurricane approaching... definite anxiety.
Just have batteries, canned food, and lots of jugs of water for drinking (they 2 gal per person per day for 5 days)... but that includes water for washing... you can fill a bathtub (add a few drops of bleach) to keep as back-up water just in case. Especially in the city, water supply can be an issue. We spent 5 days with no power in '05 from Wilma and it was not bad... we had the fridge hooked up to a generator so food wasn't a huge issue. We just wished we had bought more bread & soup. |

we have no generator but a neighbor does, so worst case we could always bring perishables to her. She had no power for a week after irene.

Ah, make friends! Now! Quick... Do you have a grill? We ended up cooking on the grill all week.

Yes, we have a grill, but we would have no food to cook on it if our fridge spoils.
I guess we could put a pot on it and boil water for pasta and rice.....

We lost power for 3 days during Snowtober. I was quite panicky with two littles at home, but DH saw it as an adventure, and once I turned on that attitude it was a lot easier. The kids thought that eating a grilled dinner by lantern-light was an adventure. I'm worried about spoilage this time. Last time we just put snow in our fridge and freezer to keep it cold.
It's big news and a big storm, but I'm trying not to worry since we don't know what'll happen yet. We are pretty prepared (make sure you have laundry done!), so there is no reason to panic until our safety is compromised. It's easier said than done, but that's what I'm trying to do.

It is heading toward me as well here in Virginia Beach. Hopefully by the time it gets up to you it will be a tropical storm (or even a tropical depression) and won't do major damage. From the local forecasts it appears that it will lose significant strength once it hits land.
They have closed the schools here tomorrow as well as the naval shipyard where my hubby is stationed. I am in Virginia Beach (right on the border of North Carolina) -- quite a bit down the coast from you. From the forecasts I am expecting them to cancel school on Tuesday as well. Bah... I don't get much work done when the kids and hubby are home. Hopefully by Wednesday I can kick everyone out of the house -- back to work and school for them. Wednesday is my 20th wedding anniversary -- might be kinda difficult to go out to dinner if we are in the middle of a hurricane. LOL Sometimes I feel like I have become too complacent about hurricanes. We are ALWAYS in their path -- yet in the 20+ years I have lived in Virginia Beach we haven't been hit hard. We had a few that did some semi-serious damage -- but nothing too severe. I do have a decent hurricane emergency kit with bottled water, radio with batteries, and etc. but other than that I don't start to get concerned unless it is a strong category 3 or higher. We don't have a generator. The longest we have lost power is less than 12 hours -- and most of the time we don't lose it for more than a few hours (if that). There was a voluntary evacuation here a few years ago -- don't remember the name of the storm -- but we didn't leave. Just boarded up the windows and rode it out. I realize we have been very lucky -- and luck can only hold out for so long. I am keeping my fingers crossed regardless. Keep safe sweetie! Eva

We've gone through these a few times, make sure you have lots of water, non perishables, and be prepared to have no electricity just in case! Tie down anything in the yard, too. I think we, like Eva, get complacent as well, we get Cat 1s or Tropical Storms usually because once it hits the cooler water, it weakens, but it's still something to prepare for. Stay safe!

Stay safe those storms are scary! Fill up a camping cooler with Ice you can fit quite a bit in them and they will last for 3 to 4 days as long as you keep them shut except for when you are going to eat!

Stay safe everyone that's in the path of the storm.
I just got shocked when I called the information number for the office and found out that it's closed tomorrow. I was told that never happens. So much for never. |

I still don't even want to think about it. I'm hoping that it won't be too bad here; I'm expecting a lot of rain (it's already started) and some wind. We're not in an area with much danger of flooding, but we could lose power. I made sure that we could find our flashlights and have plenty of batteries and filled up the fuel cans for the generator. I'm trying to get the rest of the laundry done tonight and I'm going to fill up the bathtub before I go to bed. My hubby sure picked a heck of a time to have to be away for work .

Stay safe Alisa! I'll be thinking of you and everyone else here in the East.
We're supposed to start with the winds and some rain tomorrow afternoon but it's still unsure where it's going to go once it gets up here. Flooding of course is the big concern here on the coast - boats have been being pulled into dry dock since Friday. I hate losing power because then I can't work, but at least I have a gas stove and gas oven. We do lose all water though (toilets and faucets) because we have a well, so I've added to my bottled water supply out in the garage. |

Stay Safe everyone! Here in Ontario Canada we are supposed to get hit as well - however - nowhere near the effect as in the U.S. - so to all in Sandy's path - stay safe - thinking of everyone!!

Stay safe, everyone! We're all stocked up with batteries and non-perishable food; the kids' schools have already been cancelled for Mon and Tues; and the government is closed tomorrow so DH will be home, too. I'm more worried about my family in NYC than about us. I don't think it will be too bad here damage-wise, but no bets on our power situation.
