Dude. CS5 just rocked my world.
So as I mentioned in bexy's thread about CS5, I hadn't given the new content aware fill a try yet. But I was searching for a honeymoon photo for a layout and remembered this one of the Colosseum that I wanted to try and remove the street lamp from. So I thought I'd give it a whirl and see how well it did.
Below are the before and afters. I used the exact same edits on both files, so the only difference is the content aware fill fix. Before After! Color me IMPRESSED!

Well thanks Colleen! I was totally happy with CS4 and now I want to upgrade to CS5, because it's my last chance to get the student version.

Yep that is perfect example! You don't have to use it often, but when you do WOW! It boggles my mind how it does that!

I even showed Jordan and he was like "how did you do that?" I said IT did it. He said "what do you mean photoshop did it?" LOL! I said, it did it. I lasso'd it and hit fill and it fixed it on it's own! He was impressed too.
Now I know of several others I'm gonna have to try this on

holy cow. I think I need it now, even tho I am using CS4. I have SO many photos from our years in italy that need things out of them like that and I have avoided using them becaues its a pain to clone them out.

I mean, I had seen examples of the CAF back when it first came out, and it looked amazing and all, but there's something different about seeing it work on your own photos, you know?

That is really cool. Does it get rid of people, too? Meh, that was a dumb question, since the program only thinks of the lassoed areas as pixels, but have you tried it on eliminating people from pictures?

Julie, this is literally the only thing I've tried it on. I think it would depend on what you're trying to remove though. I mean, removing 1 person from a 2 person portrait probably still won't look great, you know? I think it would depend on the application.

That's amazing, Colleen! Another one of those "little" (yeah, right) things that tempt me to switch to CS instead of PSE!!

Duplicate the background layer and select it to work on (so you can always delete it if you hate it and you don't ruin the original). Use a lasso to select what you want (and it doesn't have to be SUPER close to the object either). Go to edit>fill and a box will pop up. Select content aware and then ok. Boom. Done. Awesomeness.

And it works faster on Windows 7??
Oh maybe I might have to dig up a report card... Is the student/teacher addition a full purchase only, no upgrade option? Is it the same program as if you were to purchase the non-student/teacher version? Right now, I have CS3 Master collection. Can I just upgrade Photoshop? Is this what I'm looking for? Yes it can remove people. It just depends on the background, etc it is sampling from. I tried one of my DS and his friends close together on the couch and it didn't do well with this one, but then I did this one of our trip to Colorado last spring break and removed my mom from the photo:
now the first edit seemed to be a little obvious on the cloning but I just selected part of it that stood out to me and selected content aware fill again and it made it better. Still less than 5 minutes from finding a photo to posting it here! |
