Why I haven't been around so much

My 2 year old DD is going to have surgery on her head & brain before her third birthday (February 22nd).

Doesn't that sentence just suck to read? We've been spending every minute we could to try to get her to talk. We've tried everything. Its just not happening. We saw her genetics doctor and she told us the news. As part of Rachel's condition her head is oddly shaped. Its really long from front to back. The back of her head is really narrow and in the spot where her skull needs to fuse together with her spine is a dip (right now). The problem is that her brain has fallen back into that dip. She will need surgery to remove one or two pieces of her skull where her head is narrow to give more room for her brain. Then a "plate" may have be inserted to keep her brain from going back into the dip.

While they are doing this may insert a shunt to see if it helps reduce the fluid on her head - which they think is the reason she's so delayed so in her speech.

Now we're just preparing for this surgery. We still have to talk to her neurosurgeon next month to get all of the details.

I know how scary that can be. My daughter was diagnosed with Chiara Malformation and we were not sure if she would need surgery or not. For us it would have never even been diagnosed had it not been for her being a car accident. Ill keep your daughter in my thoughts and hope that everything goes perfectly and she will be chatting away with you very soon!

SO sad! And scary!!! My neice was just diagnosed with a Chiara Malformation about 2 months ago and she just had surgery for it last week (she's 8). It's a miracle she got in so fast... but apparently it can heal better when they are so young, so hopefully all will go well!

Yikes! These situations are sooo scary! If it helps to give you hope, my 2 yo nephew had a brain tumor that they discovered in December. They did the operation just after Christmas, and now you would hardly know that he had brain surgery. Kids heal sooo fast and doctors are really good at what they do. I'll keep your family in my prayers that the situation will be the same!
