Help- packing liquids for airline travel!

Julie Billingsley

The Ghost of Awesome Past
I need help! My DH's grandma died and he is traveling back to North Dakota on Tuesday morning. We haven't flown anywhere since 2000, before the regulations. I'm trying to quickly find out everything, and know about the 3 ounces in the quart-sized bag rule. But I can't find the info on how full that bag can be. Can the quartsized bag be stuffed full or a little bulging... as long as it still zips closed? Also, I went out and got the tiny bottles of everything today and the mouthwash is 3.2 ounces... I believe the rule is 3 ounces. Will they let it slide? It is unopened with the safety seal still on it. Thanks anyone that can help, I'm going crazy trying to get my DH ready to go.

Remember you can have full sized in your luggage, right? It's just the carryon rule, I think! As far as I know, as long as the bag shuts you are fine!

Hey Julie-

Do you have to carry these things in your carry-on luggage? If you're able to put things in checked bags, that's easiest. :) The quart-sized bag just has to zip. I'd be hesitant about the mouthwash, probably depends on who you have checking the bag. Maybe you could put it in a smaller container? Lots of places sell smaller "airport-approved" sized containers for travel.

So sorry about the loss in your family.....I hope the travels go smoothly!

ETA: Was typing when you mentioned the extra carry-on info. :) Oops! lol

Oh, and watch that he doesn't have a pocket knife on him. A dumb thing for me to write about, but I mention it because I used to keep a cute little one on my key chain without any thought about it being a weapon!

I bought the mouthwash and other stuff in the 'travel section' of Target... once I got home I realized it was too big by the .2 ounces.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'm happy to hear that as long as it will zip closed that he'll be fine!

And does anyone know... does his razor have to be in the quart-sized bag?

I don't know the regulations as I don't carry on my luggage, but I live in North Dakota. Surprised me to see that's where he is going.

he'll most likely be fine with the mouthwash. . . .but, once in awhile they get really picky. And, i recently travelled and used a gallon size bag, (that wasn't stuffed), they didn't say anything.

I may be wrong, but I don't think he'll be able to take a razor (at least not the traditional razor blade kind) in a carryon. He may just have to buy one when he gets there.

his razor can just go in his bag..only liquids, gels, and aerosol have to be in the ziploc. I would have him put his shaving cream in the ziploc though

TSA site says
Safety Razors - including disposable razors are ok in the carry on
Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, razor blades not in a cartridge, but excluding safety razors. (a shaving type razor is considered a safety razor)

you can take a razor, not an old fashioned straight razor, but if he's bringing his Gilette, Mach 4 what have you. . . .it's all good.

Last time we went through security they took everything. I think it is 3 oz. total so if you have mouthwash/toothpaste/etc. they will take it all. But that was at Christmas so who knows. They will take things like nail clippers and nail files too so don't pack those either.

I travel a bit (mostly for work) and I usually don't check bags. It really depends on the airport. For example, Seatac is really lax, whereas Spokane will make you throw anything 0.1 oz over the limit away. Sometimes it's just easier to stop by the grocery store when you get to your destination rather than worrying about going through security, lol. Most hotels will provide you with toiletries too. Sorry to hear about your DH's grandmother. Please accept my condolences.

Razors are allowed on the carry ons. My DH takes never checks his bag when he travels and has never had a problem with his razor.

If it's .2 over the 3 oz mark, just have DH gargle with some and put it under the 3 oz mark.

I travel a fair amount and I've never had anyone scrutinize the exact amounts on our tiny little bottles of stuff (and I know that my shampoo bottle is 4 oz). The worst that is going to happen is they'll make him throw it away, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
