anyone else bank with bank of america get this letter?

I got a letter today saying my check card number COULD have been compromised and they sent a new card to stop any fraudulent charges with the old card and the old card will be cancelled in 30 days from the date of the letter. I am going to call the bank now to see why they think my number was compromised because this is the second time that we have received a letter like this linked to this account. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen or recently got the same letter?

Not a letter just like that. But we've received several letters (including from DH's gov't card with Bank of America) from various companies and agencies about how some personal information on "tapes" and databases may have been compromised and they have to let us know, yadda yadda. We've put fraud alerts in with the big three credit reporting companies three separate times now in response to these letters as a protective measure. It's a scary reminder, in the technical age, that our information really isn't as secure as we'd like to think.

ANYway...it's a good idea to call and ask specifically why and how your information may be compromised. It may be one of those situations where they just have to cover their bases (like I described above), but it *could* be something else. Either way it's a good idea to file fraud alerts with the big three credit reporting agencies anyway. It's free and offers a little peace of mind.

WOW. I'm glad I don't bank with them... if I got more than one of those letters I'd be changing banks in a heartbeat! I use a credit union and Wells Fargo.

This was on my card the last time was my husbands and it was about five years ago. I just called and she said one of the stores I shop at had their information compromised and she cant really give me anymore information. So I have no idea what store it was at but the only stores I ever really use my card at is online scrapbooking stores and occasionally at a convenience store. When we go grocery shopping or out on the weekends we use my husbands card

I get e-mails from the Bank of America and I live in Canada.

I had it happen once on a Bank of America card, maybe a year or so ago. I don't remember the details anymore, but at the time there were lots of news stories about how many people's info had been potentially compromised (at many different banks, IIRC). More and more I'm using prepaid Visa cards for online transactions instead of my 'regular' credit cards.

I also wonder...is only Bank of America having this problem, or is it that they're being more proactive than most and sending the new card before a problem can develop? I'd want to know that before I assumed the worst and cancelled the account.

well I called and basically she (the CSR on the phone) told me that it doesnt mean my info was necasarily (sp?) been compromised. She told me there is a chance and as soon as the new card they sent was activated my old card (and therefore the card number which had possibly been compromised) would no longer be any good. That eased my mind alot. Also told me I would not be liable for any charges. The only bad thing about that is we would not be able to do anything until the charges posted to our account which sometimes takes three or four days. It sucks waiting for something to go from pending transactions to posted transactions and in the meantime our money is not accessable even if we didnt authorize the charge. That is what really worried me about the whole thing. If they hit our account when my husband deposits his check they could wipe out the whole thing and we would have no money available to us.
