So.. There was confusion in my head yesterday about bento. Bento to me.. is something that they do in japanese restaurants and for lunches (those are boxes.. but at some restaurants they have just these tray things).. Anyway.. So yesterday I was confused cause lena showed me her darling bento box, and it was more snacky and cute shaped foods. I think there must be lots of different types of bento cause yeh... I obviously don't know everything LOL
Sooooooooooooo... I decided that I wanted to try a bento style meal for ce- I do not have a bento box, so it's pseudo bento. I found *the* most adorable square bowl and dip dishes at target today (they had some really cheap black ones too.. but I apparently *needed* to have the black and red ones.. there's only two of us, no big deal haha).. anyway.. so it's not super compartmentalized like it's supposed to be.. and the compartments are supposed to be square/at angles.. and I have a round one.. who cares. It worked. No one said I was japanese :p ..
Anyway......... Ce was sooooooooo excited. AND I made THE perfect sticky rice. I was quite impressed by my lil rice balls if I do say so myself. I think, if I can figure out where to buy seaweed.. I may try to make some veg sushi rolls because well, I have enough rice in this bag to last me a lifetime now.
so without further ado.. here are the piccies of my pseudo bento..

It's sticky rice (duh.. I said this already LOL) .. and teriyaki chicken ( grated ginger, 1 thingy of garlic smooshed and teriyaki sauce mixed together then poured over the chicken, stirred etc and cooked for about an hour.. my mom said 1.5 hrs, it would have gotten browner but ce was "starving" which never happens, so out the chicken came lol.. they were little pieces so they were cooked thoroughly) and then I made a quick stir fry.. again witht he ginger and garlic, and baby bella mushrooms, carrots, and whatever those things are called.. pea pod things. The ginger adds such a fun flavour to the food.. I added quite a bit because we like really flavourful food - and I don't measure.. so you'd have to figure out that :p
the end

oh oh.. AND.. the best part.. ce told me that my chicken was better than my moms ... *giggle* best meal ever.

Yum!! That looks totally fun! I need to make bento boxes (Ava eats like that anyways at lunch - I just toss stuff on her tray and she eats, haha!)... I'd feel so much better about "serving" the lunch if it was IN something, haha!!

PS - I love sticky rice and yours indeed does look perfect! What kind of rice did you make? Don't just say "white", lol!!

eta: I was going to really try to make sushi.. except for my inability to find seaweed. I did still add a lil rice vinegar.. oh and I don't have a rice cooker.. so I did it you know.. normal, in a pot, but then I put a towel over it for like 20 minutes and just let it set.

Aha! Thanks! I'll look for it! Is it fairly small grain? Like little round pellets? I've bought some sort of japanese rice before and thats what it looked like and stuck to EVERYTHING... I fed it to Ava and then had to bath her to get it off her body and out of her hair, lol!

Surely you have an internationl market near you la? That meal looks FAB...My kids and I talked about diong bento lunches this year and looked at some online...mine eat so much better ina "snacky" way than a traditional sandwich, chips, etc

Oh that's really neat. I might have to try something to that extent with Owen as he's decided he doesn't need to really eat anymore.
