I was at Costco yesterday and picked up the 1TB WD My Book for $250 (they had a 500GB for $140, and a 2TB for $500 as well). Anyhow, I got home last night, and hooked it up...it's not as intuitive as my other EHD, lol.
This one is supposed to have an automatic backup system, but the ones I see on it, you have to buy both of them (they're by Memeo, and are only 30 day trials). I tried using them, but couldn't figure out where it was putting the files. And I'm not sure I want to pay for it, lol...I was under the impression that it CAME with this, not that I'd have to buy it afterwards.
It says to get rid of the install programs it comes with, you can format the drive - did you? I'm thinking of it, not because the stuff takes up a lot of space, but because it's useless to have on an EHD (Google Desktop installer, Picasa, Google Toolbar for IE, then the 2 Memeo products).
If you don't use the auto backup systems, do you just copy/paste files over to it? That's what I do with my current EHD, but I kinda liked the idea of not having to think about it and letting it do it's thing. But apparently it's a 2-way thing...if I update files on either my computer OR the EHD, it "fixes" it on the other (including deleting files).
I don't know why this one seems more complicated to use than my other EHD (which is a 300GB WD hard drive inside a random case, lol).
Oh, and also...it says not to use it like a "portable drive"...does that mean I can't use it between computers? Or that I shouldn't back up and then take it somewhere else for safe keeping?
