Hey hey guys...
I'm really wanting to start a new series on DVD but I have no clue what show to start. Soooo tell me your favorite shows and why you love them/what's great about the series so I can look into which show to watch next.
I've seen and loved alias, 24, just finished all 3 seasons of ghost hunters , love battlestar gallactica, love lost, etc, etc.
Tell me about Prison Break, Gossip Girl, anything you love - it's like reading a good book watching a whole series at once on DVD so give me some pointers!

The most recent (and often) show I watch on DVD/dvr/on demand is Rescue Me or Weeds.
BOTH of these are adult content - just so you are warned.
Weeds? Love how Mary Louise Parker would be such a bad person, if she wasn't so darn cute/typical middle class mom.
Rescue Me? Denis Leary just is my kind of sarcasm and enough drama to keep me wanting more.
HOWEVER! Girlmore Girls - totally cute. JB (my DH) is a 12 yr old girl (in disguise) and watches this show over and over and over on DVD (he used to travel a LOT out of country on business - and bought a bunch of shows on DVD so that he could watch TV in English, rather than trying to keep up in Russian or French) and he's also hooked on Gossip Girl - because of the story line factor (I think he just likes the girls *wink wink*)
We also have Scrubs, Undeclared (a Judd Apatow series that is totally funny and should never have been canceled), the West Wing, as well as another Aaron Sorkin tv-show - SportsNight on rotation in our house for TV series rotations.

Weeds is good too :)

oh! totally Nerdy - but cute story line - Greek. ABC Family show. No idea if it's out on DVD though.
(mostly family friendly from what I can remember - I know I didn't cringe/pause it (or wait for him to go to bed) if my 4 yr old walked into the room

Gilmore Girls is a MUST!! Totally amazing.
If you like really clever writing, Veronica Mars is amazing too! Only three seasons :( but one of my all-time favorite TV series.
If you want a good laugh, How I Met Your Mother is downright HYSTERICAL (my hubby got me hooked).
I recently watched all the seasons of Felicity and it took me back to highschool and college for me. Its also a really great series (last part of final season gets a bit weird, but still good).
Lets see... what else? I only watch tv series on Netflix, so I have a ton.
Of course, Desperate Housewives is seriously addictive, as is House and Grey's Anatomy.
Thats all I can really think of now. But my #1 reccomendation would be Gilmore Girls. LOVE IT!!

Ok so I'm all caught up on Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, watched felicity back in the day, not into desperate housewives, house is just ok for me.
Tell me about Dexter, Gossip Girl, Bones, Supernatural, Veronica Mars - I kinda like weird, sci-fi, actiony, paranormal or nitty gritty drama like grey's - do you think these series would be a good match? I also tend to like a driving storyline as opposed to an episodic series. Ie. CSI is good but the fact that you can kinda watch every episode on it's own and enjoy it without watching the whole series doesnt keep my interest - I want a show that each episode is part of a much bigger plotline kwim?
Keep the recs coming!

Here's a couple of good incentives to watch Supernatural lol...

Seriously though when DH ordered this from netflix I was skeptical b/c I'd never heard of it..(i think it comes on the WB or some network like that) anyway, it's really well written..funny/scary and their dad is played by that hottie from Grey's Anatomy who played Denny! I'm counting down the days until I can get season 3 :)

Ok, here's my plug for Veronica Mars. First, I never really had the urge to see the show, but I had heard so many good things about it that, on a whim, I netflix-ed it one day. OHMYWORD. Its so good! So the number one thing about it is the writing. SO clever and a little funny (its not a comedy, but it'll make you laugh sometimes) and the characters are really great. As for the storyline, you'll love VM because the storyline is HUGE and not only goes from episode to episode, but from season to season. I dare you to rent the first disk and NOT get hooked. Its that good.

Bones is a good one, too...it's CSI-ish, but then there's a sub-plot going on through it with the characters. I don't watch it too much anymore because I've started getting grossed out/creeped out by those shows (CSI, Bones, Criminal Minds).
ColleenSwerb
07-31-2008, 03:44 PM
You'd definitely like Dexter.
Bones is somewhat episodic. I just like the character interactions. It's like a super nerdy CSI with David Boreanez thrown in for good measure, lol.

Oooh, what about The Zone? It with Anthony Michael Hall and DH and I watched the first two seasons. It was REALLY good. Basically AMH is a guy who wakes up after being in a coma for 9-ish years. And now he can "see" the future by touching people and he sorta becomes a crime-solver. But the plots are really good and the actors are great too.

Like Shannon, we have all of the King of Queens, love that show.
We are caught up with CSI Las Vegas.
The OC, Dawsons Creek, Gilmore Girls, Charmed.
They just released season one of Third Watch..I loved that show!
Thinking of starting Greys Anatomy up next, I haven't seen any of that yet.
Hubby does the "Ghost Hunters" thing.

The few I had in mind have already been suggested-Prison Break, Samantha Who and Weeds.
LOL, how about Life as We Know It? I got hooked on it, and I'm really not sure why... It only ran for one season-not sure if that's something you'd like or not. Sleeper Cell was pretty good, ran a few years back on Showtime... I only saw the first season, liked it, but canceled showtime before we got to see the second season-that's on my to rent list.
Hmm, that's all I got right now! lol, can't think of anything else.

Dawson's Creek! LOL, that's what i'm watching now
but we have:
Dawson's Creek (ofc)
Doctor Who ( S/O LOVES it)
Everwood ( but that only lasted 2 seasons, sadly)
One Tree Hill
Seinfeld (funny)
Ghost Whisoerer
Also watched:
Everybody loves Raymond
Heroes
7th Heaven
Touched by an Angel (oldie, i know)
That's all i can think of

OMG... I love TV on DVD. I would totally recommend Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Felicity (I'm such a dork), or Entourage.
My mom also LOVES the OC and Smallville.
I'm currently watching Gilmore Girls for the 20th time, I love that I can pop it in and just have it as background and I've watched it so many times I practically know it word for word... LOL!

Oh, I was going to say 24... but NM!! It is my fave show ever... yeah, yummmmy Jack Bauer! lol! We also do Alias... sounds like we have similar tastes.
Another fave around here is Heroes. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Prison Break, but my DH likes it. The Unit is kinda cool too! We are also addicted to Smallville! And I'm a little weird and still am in love with the X-Files. hehehehe
For a good laugh we LOVE Monk! :)

A funny about 24...after LOST it's my fave show ever and we have all 6 seasons on DVD...my Dad had never watched them so I let him borrow them and my mom told me this morning that he is obsessed and she's sick of that show lol...
I can't wait til it's back in 09...but I saw that Keifer has a new movie coming out soon so that's good :)

I think the only one that hasn't been mentioned is Charmed... I just started watching that one. I love Grey's but I'm getting frustrated with the M & McDreamy storyline. I've seen a few episodes of Ghost Whisperer and keep thinking I need to nextflix that one.
If you want an amazing mini series (i think it's about 12 hours total), Band of Brothers is a must see. I'm not one to watch movies/series more than once usually, but I've watched this 3 times. It's kinda heavy, but it's so good!
Let us know what you decide on.

Dexter (http://www.amazon.com/Dexter-Season-Michael-C-Hall/dp/B000Q6GUW0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1217536387&sr=1-2)! I fell in love with that show so quickly! He's a serial killer you just love and don't want him to get caught. LOL Can't wait until season 3 starts in the fall!
Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers.

Big Love - this one hasn't been mentioned yet. I find it really interesting and entertaining. I watch it when I run on the treadmill.
Veronica Mars - each season has a season-long mystery/crime to solve, but each episode also has its own storyline. I loved this show! I was also in several episodes in Season 2 as a background actor, because they filmed it in San Diego.

One of our favorite series that we got into right after we had Libby was Six Feet Under. It's an HBO show. It's very dark, yet very funny. The character development is just incredible. There are things that you will love about each character and things that you despise at the same time. It's awesome that each character is relatable in some way. I don't usually get into shows like that, but wow. It was awesome!! Just a warning though - it's definitely something you guys will want to watch after the kiddos are in bed!! The language and other adult content are definitely not suitable for them!! But it's an HBO show, that's to be expected!!

The Tudors comes on here on Tuesdays, just before Big Brother, lol...so I've watched it the last couple weeks. It's pretty good, though all I know of Henry VIII is from reading the books by Philippa Gregory (The Constant Princess and The Other Boleyn Girl so far...there are 4 more books, I think) and she takes liberties with the facts, so I'm having a hard time not thinking "hey, that's not how it happened..." lol!

Hahhaah - this is another one that we laugh at. a LOT!
"never let crazy talk you into having a baby" - hahahaha.
I'm a big Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars fan too.
The only show I actually own on DVD is Arrested Development. It is so much funnier on DVD because all the jokes and storylines carry over from episode to episode and season to season. It's seriously one of my favorite comedies ever.

We have been thinking about doing Stargate: Atlantis tho - do any of you who have seen both have an opinion on which series is better?
We used to watch SG1 a bit but we like Atlantis better. :) Hotter guys in that one, imo.

I prefer Atlantis to SG1. I stopped watching SG1 at some point. I wanted to like it more than I did & DH enjoys it so it was on anyway. Atlantis is better IMO.
But Babylon 5 is the best. 5 year long story arc, each episode has it's own overall plot but the little subplots sort of all tie in over the course of the season & every episode moves the overall story forward. Great chracters, great plots, great dialogue. Just wonderful overall. :)

OK...I am going to recommend one that hasn't been mentioned yet. It is called Mad Men (http://www.amctv.com/originals/madmen/about/) and it plays on AMC. HBO passed on it and now they are kicking themselves. It was just nominated for 16 Emmys. It is SOOOOOOO good. It is set in the late 50's/early 60's. Explores the gender roles of men and women in post-WWII society. The Mad Men are Madison Avenue advertising executives in NYC. The set is so cool and retro and the main character is a total hunk.

Not sure if it is on DVD but you can get it FREE On Demand on the AMC channel. Highly recommend it.

Ok, so I know everyone seems to be Sci-Fi, Drama geared, but I have to throw these two shows out there:
30 Rock...if Tina Fey isn't funny enough, Alec Baldwin is comic genius on that show...try to find the episode when Elaine Stritch plays his mother...priceless...
and my other favorite...
Ugly Betty!!...it's sooo soapy, but totally has a great message and always touching...plus, Marc and Amanda have filled the void left in my heart since Karen and Jack (from Will and Grace) went away...I have season 1, but I don't have season 2, but it was awesome!

Doctor Who, Doctor Who, Doctor Who...
how can you resist?? A completely adorable Brit who gets into trouble with aliens ALL the time.
it's so wicked good, it's not even funny. it consistently makes me cry.
PS My favorite shows are Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Battlestar, Lost, Heroes... so if your taste runs with mine...
DOCTOR WHO!!!

Love your flair!

Okay I don't think anyone posted ours...now as a background...I love to LAUGH... not into scary or skin flicks...besides my 13 and 14 year old watch all the programs with me...
They watch on their own:
CHIPS (remember those good looking motorcycle cops?)
Emergency (Randy Mantooth...hubba hubba)
Knight Rider (David Hasselhoff)
...okay maybe I don't mind watching with them...lol
We also have Home Improvement...but they got kinda burned out on that so we don't have all the years.
We have gone through M*A*S*H so many times...8 or 9 times through the 11 years...that the boys have it memorized...so just yesterday my Amazon order came in and we have all 6 years of Hogan's Heroes...so we're watching season one at this moment. lol
I am taping Night Court for me to watch...since it's not quite what I want the boys to see. I am going to put on dvd and watch it when I exercise in the basement. lol
We also tape "unwrapped" from the food channel...love to watch that show.
We are impatiently waiting for "After MASH" to come out...hoping it does anyway.
Jeesh I guess we are TV on DVD junkies! I like the programs back then... much less for me to worry about my boys watching than some of today's programs.

ohmygosh! How could I forget about Scrubs?!?!?! Its my all-time favorite sitcom. Never EVER fails to crack me up and I use so many of their catch-phrases from that show!
"Frick on a stick" or "double frick" or even sometimes just "frick"
and
"So's your face"
and
"Boing Fwip"
lol ok, now I'm giggling to myself here at the computer just thinking about this show. :)

Sounds like we have some common likes as you do Robin- *loved* Alias, 24, Heroes, and Lost.
We also like Smallville, The Unit, Jerecho and one that hasn't been mentioned is The Shield- a trial police department in southern CA- their struggles, the cops struggles between dirty cop/good cop, etc. Great character developement and each episode really builds on the last.

Thanks for all the awesome suggestions chicklets! I'm gonna start with dexter, veronica and supernatural and then go from there.
We tried watching stargate:SG1 a few months ago and didnt get further than 8 episodes in - it was too episodic for us. We have been thinking about doing Stargate: Atlantis tho - do any of you who have seen both have an opinion on which series is better?
I love both. They're totally different really, with the only thing in common Stargates and Stargate command. Keep in mind SG1 ran for 10 years and there actually is a story line; just a very long one, lol.
Atlantis is my fave to watch right now only for the reason I've watched the reruns of SG-1 what seems a million times (and I still love the show). The villains in Atlantis are cooler though, lol. The Wraith are incredibly snappy dressers, lol.

I always buy my favorite shows on dvd! So much easier than having to sit down at a specific time and remeber what day to watch :)
My favorite is definitely Desperate Housewives! I just love that show!!
But others I like are Dirt, Rescue Me, CSI (Las Vegas).

Well I'm starting with Dexter, Supernatural and Veronica Mars but I think I want to check out Jericho, Stargate: Atlantis, Dr. Who, Bones and quite a few others too... Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill - I'm not sure they'll keep my attention but I have pretty diverse taste, so I'm gonna give it a go.
About the only thing I really DONT like is comedy sitcom type of stuff or shows that were on more than 10 years ago LOL. I just dont find scripted humor funny most of the time and for some reason, I can tell when shows are old.
This thread has been AWESOME!! Thank you guys sooo much for all the recommendations - I'm gonna have tons to watch over the coming months.

Yep. You have summed it up perfectly. You and I are tv soulmates, Robin <3.
If you completely fall in love with Doctor Who, don't forget to start watching Torchwood... it's the adult spin-off... it's very very saucy in the first season, toned down in the second. But it's fairly decent... it's basically a sci-fi drama with lots of bi-sexual tension. (The main character is from the 51st century living in our time, but apparently in the 51st century anything goes.)
But the new Doctor Who and Torchwood are both created by a huge Joss (Buffy, Angel, Firefly) Whedon fan, if that tells you anything. ;)

I know it's not at all your taste, Robin, but since lots of us are now just reminiscing about favorite shows, I'll profess my love for Gilmore Girls. I was so sad when that one ended. I need to start rewatching (for the 3rd or 4th time) soon. I love Grey's, but I haven't found any current shows that hold a candle to GG. I'm still holding out hope there will be one soon, so I can't wait for the descriptions and reviews of the new shows starting in the fall.

Ditto Dexter... love it!
All of the HBO shows- but especially if you're into historical/period pieces, Rome and Deadwood are GREAT, but very adult so no kiddies around. Both ended way too soon if you ask me.
Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck are also Faves. I love watching TV on DVD- we're just into season 3 of 24- fun stuff! And no waiting for next week or the next season to start.
And just in time for Pineapple Express, you could always check out Freaks and Geeks for a laugh.
