My husband has diabetes.

Crap.

We pretty much knew this was coming, but it still sucks. DH has a close family history of diabetes (his dad) and lives a highisk lifestyle (very overweight, poor diet, etc.). He's always been closely monitored by his doctor and has, in the past few years, become "pre-diabetic". For the past month or so he's been feeling increasingly bad and has started exhibiting the classic signs of diabetes like excessive thirst, frequent urination, increased fatigue, etc. I finally nagged him into getting another blood test done on Monday and the results came in the mail today

His fasting (12hr) glucose level was a whopping 271!!! For those of you that don't know what that number means, let me put it in perspective...

Anything lower than 100 is considered "normal"
Anything 100-125 is considered "pre-diabetes"
and
Anything over 126 is diabetic.

DH's was 271.

Damnit.

I don't know whether to cry or yell or throw something. Guess I'll just try to get some sleep.

I'm so sorry Jenny. Been there, done that. Jeff is diabetic too. His fasting blood sugar? In the freaking 600's. I can't remember the exact number, but his doctor FREAKED when he got the blood work. It's hard, and it's life altering, but you guys can do it. He'll be fine, and you'll be fine, and it will all be fine. If you need to talk, get me on yahoo and I'll help. It was just about 2 years ago that Jeff got diagnosed and I so know what you are going through right now.

My boyfriend is hypoglycemic, which some doctors see as a pre-diabetic condition, and spent most of his life battling his blood sugar as he was both a sugar and caffeine addict which further exacerbated his natural highstrung tendencies. Fast forward to three weeks ago when I conveniently checked some hypoglycemic books out from the library and left them out at my house when he came over. He took them home to read and has completely revamped his lifestyle after what he read in the books: no alcohol, no sugar or artificial sweeteners, no caffeine, and little to no carbs or dairy. He said he has never felt better in his life, and his mood swings have almost completely stabilized, even when he realizes his blood sugar is getting low. He has also lost 11 pounds in that time.

So there is hope as long as your DH is willing to make the changes a permanent part of his lifestyle and he will be able to live a much healthier lifestyle that will make him feel so much better. It sucks, but it is definitely manageable and can have a minimum impact on your life with some education and proactive choices on everyone's part.

Sorry to hear that Jenny, Diabetes is hard to get usef to but it will be a change for the better, you guys are so lucky you caught it before he got really sick, if he is only on the pills the condition could resolve itself with diet and exersice, hope he feels better soon, hugs!

I'm sorry Jenny :(. This is manageable though and things will get better. Go ahead and be angry/mad/sad, that's ok too. It's scary. you've gotten a lot of good advice so far.

Let's just pray that this is a good wake up call for him and that he begins treating his body with the respect he deserves. Diet and exercise can reverse this all together, so hopefully he will start eating better, lose some weight and kick the diabetes in the arse.
