Are "going to school"? Like, not necessarily IN school, but taking some courses, whether at a school/university or through distance learning/correspondence or night classes, whatever.

Megan's post made me wonder, lol.

DH suggested the other night that I look into going back to school...I have no education past grade 12, and I would like to have something to fall back on - you know, just in case. There is a university here that does mostly all distance learning...I can get a certificate in accounting by taking 10 courses online (and no, I'm not talking like those ones you hear about or get mail from - the cheesy cheap education ones).

Anyhow, I'm kinda considering it. I actually was going to do this before I got pregnant with Mason, and it got put on hold while I did the whole mom thing, lol. Honestly, the whole idea scares me just a bit, lol. I *loved* accounting in school, but some of the courses I know are hard (microeconomics and macroeconomics), and I really wonder if I'll keep up if I do it on my own - I *am* a known procrastinator (just ask my CT, lol).

Yeah, so...just looking for experiences...how has it been for all of you that have decided to do the mom/wife thing and go to school at the same time?

I am going to school right now for graphic design. I can only take a few classes at a time right now due to my scheduling with kids but next year when my middle son get in kindy, I will take up some more classes. I really don't have a hard time with adding my school load to my already busy life. I just know my limits and don't try to do too much at one time.

Well, you know I'm in school... ;) But the only reason I have been able to go to school full time after having DD is that DH and I manage an apartment complex together so that when I'm gone to class he can watch the baby.

If that job hadn't worked out I would be doing correspondence courses (long distance type courses).

What's really important when you're a mom is to have the support of others, particularly your hubby. It sounds like your hubby is since he's the one who thinks you should look into it. It is sooo helpful when I need to study and I can tell Tyrel I need to go to campus to get away and focus on my stuff... and he is so willing to just let me go while he looks after Allie! Otherwise, I wouldn't do very well.

Oh, and I actually love school with the exception of a few courses (i.e. the course I was complaining about today... I had an exam). And I am a procrastinator as well... always doing stuff last minute but I have done very well!! Seriously, doing papers the night before ALL. THE. TIME. :D

I think you should GO FOR IT!!

it was actually when my first husband was in basic training that I decided I needed to go back to school...I got to having those "what if" thoughts and panicked at the thought of having my husband die and not having an education to fall back on. Even with life insurance it's not like I'd be set for life.

So, I went back to college and got my bachelor's degree. I graduated when I was pregnant with Naomi and while I haven't used the degree, I'm so glad I have it in case anything happens. Sometimes I want to get my Master's and then I come to my senses. lol!!

I am in school to get my Masters of Business Administration and should be done in December :crosses fingers:. I love it. I started when my daughter was 10 weeks old and since I'm a single mom it will really allow us to have a better life. I'm a huge believer in the value of education. You never know where life is going to lead you and it will only increase your chances of survival if you have something to fall back on.

Bree, you should look into your local community colleges. I started my education there and it was fantastic! The classes are small and the instructors are very accessible. Definitely go for it and good luck!

Go for it Bree! The worst you can do is get a bad grade and have to repeat a course. And if it works out just think you could be doing people's taxes or something! :)

I'm not currently in school.............but I graduated last June!

It was tough, didn't think I would survive, but I did. So, now I have a bachelor's in business management and not using it. I don't want to leave my job because I have been there for 14 years.

If it's something you want to do, then you should do it. The longer you procrastinate, the longer away for your graduation date......LOL

I actually had planned to do some English and Math courses this fall, just to get my toes back in, however, I received some unexpected news at that time, and was then unable to afford them. I am hoping though to be able to do them next fall, since January will not be feasible for us either. I would be doing them through distance education from our provincial university.

However, all that said, I'm probably not in the best frame of mind to do them now. I'm already going crazy!!!! LOL

You could start off with just a class or 2.
I have also found that the saying "The more you do, the more time you have." is really true. Not that I do all that much nowadays. But sometimes I think I should take a class or something b/c having more to do with force me to be more organized.

go for it Bree. And if you don't like it, you can say you tried :D It's not for everyone, but give it a go! I bet you wouldn't regret it a bit.

Not only am I a mom, but also a full time teacher. I am taking two classes right now, Rome and Grammar through the University of La Verne. I took a class in the Geology of So. California earlier this year. The classes I'm taking are strictly for salary advancement.

I say go for it! You may find out that it's not a path you want to travel and head in another direction!

I would love to go back and take a few classes toward my RN (I'm a LPN) but I have other ideas in my head right now....

I took a few classes here and there, but decided that being in the miltary, having a full time working spouse and 4 kids of all ages, it was just too much for me! so if I decide to go back to school it will be when I retire and Abby & Peyton are in grade school...I will be in my early 40's and who ever said that it's too late to get your education! or I am hoping to walk into a fairly good gov't postion in the hospital I work at after I retire....

I say GO FOR IT!!!!
