Especially the Nikon D40. What's to like/not like?
Then, what do you have? Love it or hate it? Why? TIA!

I have the D80 and I love it! I am just now learning how to really use it more. I love the pictures it takes on the Auto setting too!

*disclaimer* I am not a Nikon owner so I am just going on what I have read.
My understanding is that the D40 can't autofocus using certain Nikkor lenses. So if you wanted to use a 50mm f/1.8 lens you would have to manually focus every shot.

I have the d40x & LOVE it! Essentially, it's the same as the d40, but it's higher megapixels! Amanda, I tried to find it, but I couldn't. Do you know if that's the same w/the D40x w/the 50mm lens? I've really been wanting it!

I really don't know much more than that. I am just going on what I have heard from others.
The d40 does not have a built in AF motor. Here is a thread I found at DST:

There are many threads about the d40 there.
I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with your camera. Or if you have a lens addiction like me. ;)

Canon Rebel XT. I love it. it's my first dslr. but now it makes me sick that the XTi's are less than what i paid for this one, lol. oh well. i really like mine so there isn't really a reason to upgrade just yet.

Scroll down on this page and look for the Digital SLRs chart:

It will tell you which lens is good for your camera. I think you will need a lens that has AF-I or AF-S on the name for it to autofocus.

I have an XT, which I love. DH has an XTi, and bought this XT for me because he takes his everywhere and I wasn't able to get any pics of the kids anymore LOL. We are Canon peeps around here, Benjamin has a Canon too (a P&S) that we got him for his birthday. We are thrilled with ours. Good luck deciding!

I have a Nikon D50 and aside from my own stupidity, it's awesome!
Now I'm begging for the Nikon D90 because it takes video as well, but, yeah, that's not going to happen anytime soon! :)

I have an XT and I adore it. I couldn't do without my Canon, honestly!! I have heard good things about the Nikon, but, I won't be giving up my Rebel (named Spike) for anything anytime soon!
If I could ever get my house sold we are going to get a Nikon. I havent decided if we should go all out and get the D90 or something smaller. I have seen such beautiful pictures taken with them.

The best advice is to go to a store (Ritz, Best Buy, or another camera store) and PLAY. Play wtih the Canon's, play with the Nikon's, and see what suits you best.
Jordan's a Canon guy and I'm a Nikon girl. I'm used to Nikon settings, etc. The biggest thing for me through, was that the Canon seemed light and flimsy to me (the XTi and the XSi) compared to the Nikon. I just liked the way the Nikon felt in my hands a lot better than the Canon. So that's how I ended up with the D80.
It really depends on what you want to do with your camera in the future. I wanted a higher end camera with more capabilities, but not a pro camera like the d200 or d3 or whatever. When I "grow out" of the D80, i'll move up to something like that (if I decide to make photography a business venture), but the D80 perfectly suited my needs.
And then 2 months later they released the D90 :p
But I adore my D80 and I'm SO happy with it. Congrats on taking the leap into SLR's!! It's SO much fun!!!
I have the D40, and I'm in love! It has made such a difference in my photos!
The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't take videos, so I have a Nikon Coolpix S210 that I keep around just for that purpose. I can't stand to take photos with it anymore now that I'm used to the D40. I would love the new D90 purely because it does HD video, but I've got quite a few pennies to save before that happens.
There are actually quite a variety of lenses that AF with the D40; it's mainly the older ones that are the problem.
