my EHD! Apparently my EHD (which holds ALL of my scrap stuff and lots of digital photos) has died.
It is running, but when you try to open it in my computer, it just says Local drive F: (instead of MyBook with the amount of available space) and then says I have to format the disk before using it... which would of course COMPLETELY wipe out my data.
I'm hoping to get some answers from Western Digital and if not, taking it in to someone and PRAYING that they can recover my data... any suggestions for places that recover lost EHD data is greatly appreciated!
I was just looking at Mozy last week but hadn't set it up yet... so please go backup now so you don't have the stress I'm going through! :( The sense of loss is unreal... and now my Christmas projects will not be done either!

Ugh, that stinks. Have you tried calling WD? Depending on who you get on the phone, they may be able to help you. I bought an EHD from them and it died after less than 60 days :( Unfortunately, they refused a refund and only replaced it with the same crappy EHD. I know there are some recovery services out there, but they can be quite expensive. Could it be your power cord? Since I've gotten my replacement, I only fire it up once a month to transfer data (and it's just a back up), I'm so very paranoid. Maybe some of the designers you purchased from would be willing to make some of the downloads available to you again. Sorry!!

Something similar happened to me with my Maxtor One Touch. It would ask me if I wanted to format it, which freaked me out of course.
Following advice from some girls here, I unplugged it and waited a bit. Shut down PC. Waited a bit. Plugged EHD back in and restarted PC. and it was back. and all my data (as far as I could tell) was there.
Hope your EHD is just experiencing a temporary glitch.

It's currently unplugged and "resting"... I have unplugged and even tried on my son's laptop with no luck but hopeful. Trying again tomorrow and if still nothing going to try data recovery.
But seriously... go backup your stuff THIS minute girls!

I know this sounds ridiculous, but someone told me (and her hubby is a computer geek) to put it in the freezer for a while and then try it again.

I thought a while back that mine had died...it wouldn't power on at all. But then a few hours later it just turned itself on randomly, lol. My sister had a major scare (she put ALL her photos for the last 3 or more years on her own drive on their computer and it stopped recognizing it) but her hubby was able to save it, thankfully! So there IS hope!

I think Best Buy does data recovery.
