Matt Smith has been confirmed as David Tennant's successor in Doctor Who.
Aged 26, he will be the youngest ever actor to play the iconic role. His credits include political drama Party Animals and The Ruby In The Smoke, opposite former Who companion Billie Piper.
Of his casting, Smith said: "I'm flabbergasted. I haven't slept really! [Doctor Who] is an iconic part of our culture, and now I'm taking that on. It's nervewracking. Exciting. Exciting."
Smith will replace Tennant at the end of four Doctor Who specials, the last of which will air at the start of 2010. He will then go on to helm a full fifth series alongside a new companion, who is yet to be named.
Steven Moffat, who takes over from Russell T Davies as executive producer following the specials, said: "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe.
"As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.

*sigh* I'm so gonna miss David.

That guy is a bit creepy.

Although I never understood why people thought David was hot, either.

Furthermore WHY DO I EVEN KNOW THESE PEOPLE I DON'T WATCH SCI-FI

brb - need to go punch my husband.

I, too, see a bit of a creep factor in this shot.

I'm not a fan of David because he's hot. He's cute, but I like him because I love his take on the Doctor. I just t hink he's an amazing actor because he has such a great range..you just don't see it often. Tom Baker is the only other Doctor that I thought was an outstanding actor.

Right.

I can also carry on a conversation about Stargate (all flavors).

I like David. I am going to miss him. I do think it is a bit odd he gets them to do 4 specials instead of a series this year because of his other commitments & then he leaves. Why not just leave & let us get a whole series? And who knows when they will finally air here in the US?

I've been a Who fan since reruns on PBS in the late 70's. My favorite is Sylvester McCoy. He had a good mix of professor, clown and avenger as the Doctor

That must be a bad pic of him...I see another one on his IMDb and he looks better, but still not too cute. He's only 26!

Okay, I know everybody has been waiting for my rant on this... and I just tossed the baby on the bed to do so.

I am DEVASTATED that David has decided to leave... I am a hardcore Ten fan.
On that note... this guy seems WAY TOO YOUNG to have any kind of... assumed wisdom from being you know... 900 or so years old. He looks like a young Viggo Mortenson... but not Aragorn Viggo... Eastern Promises Viggo.

BUT... I will give him a chance since Steven Moffat picked him and Steven Moffat has written all of my favorite DW episodes and he's taking over the franchise later this year.

I'm almost... pissed off at David... did you know DW was the whole reason he got into acting? he plays the role for a couple - three years and decides he's done??

hmmph.

off to *steam* (and pick the baby back up)

I like David, too, but I'll keep an open mind. Matt has already worked with Billie Piper a couple of times, so I wonder if they'll bring her back for a couple guest appearances again.
And Darcy, I agree about Tom Baker - he was a great actor and he was my favorite Dr. Who.

Was Tom Baker the one that wore the long scarf? My brother actually bought that scarf and wore it everyday - DORK!!! I can't remember but he was my favorite...I used to watch the old episodes all the time but never really got into the new ones..I did watch it a couple of times and liked it though.

I'm hoping that the new doctor turns out much better than that picture. I'm already missing Catherine Tate.

My very favorite was and always will be Tom Baker. David Tenent is interesting, but I have never liked him nearly so much. Please bear with me as i stink at names, lol, but the actor who revived the role, just before Tenent, I liked much more.
One of the actor who came after Baker, first name Peter, he played a vet in All Creatures Great and Small (blonde), was great. I thought when they first chose him he was an incredibly wierd choice for the role but he worked out.
I give em all a chance, you just never know how the show's going to turn out, lol. But, there will NEVER be another Tom Baker; and K-Nine,lol.
I am terribly bummed to find out here that there will only be the four specials and then the long wait to see the new one. It typically takes a whole season to be played in the UK before we even see it for the first time :(.
I am a huge Sci Fi and Fantasy fan.

I liked Christopher Eccleston and was mad when he was traded for David Tennant...I warmed up to him though  Not sure about Matt Smith....we'll see how his acting is.
