shot with my 50mm 1:1.8 lens

it's subtle, but i do notice a difference in the amount of the puppy thats in focus with each shot! cool! i really had no idea that aperature and exposure affected the focus, lol. i feel so smart, lol!

Aperture priority is my fav mode to shoot in. I am terrible with shutter speeds and honestly still can't read the things on my camera. They never say 1/200th or what the books say- the Nikon must have a system of its own. Hmmmm maybe I should ask somebody here. blagahshmacahewersojs UGH. Yes that was total random blabbering nonsense via goat language. Aperture it is Samara!

Amy, when you look in your viewfinder, the number to the left of the F-stop is your shutter speed. The wheel on the back of your camera body controls hte shutter speed (the front wheel controls the aperture). Click it to the right, and it increases the speed; to the left decreases.

Right now with the camera pointed at my laptop monitor, and at f/1.8, for a proper exposure the shutter speed reads 160. That's 1/160.

For a very slow exposure, or one over 1 second (which would be 1/1) the number will show a quotation mark next to it. So a 1 second long exposure shows as 1" to the left of the f-stop.

Does that help? I don't remember what model you're using, but I assume all Nikon's will be similar :)

for a proper exposure the shutter speed reads 160. That's 1/160.

That's exactly it. I could never figure out why it would say 160 or a 3o or a 25. Read all about it, knew where to find it, yada yada....just had no idea what the reading was. Thanks Col, I have struggled with that one little thing for almost a year now. Should have been simple, leave it to me LOL

Focal length has a lot to do with it, too. If you shot the same shot at 1.8 on a 50mm lens and then on a 200mm, you'd notice a huge difference.

Glad to help Amy :)

Since I primarily shoot with my 50mm prime, I haven't run into that problem Angie. but good to know!

Well I wouldn't call it a PROBLEM. ;)

I love a longer focal length for more yummy depth of field.

i've read ahead to the next one. it involves taking a picture of water running out of the kitchen faucet and using the other mode, TV. i really need a tripod! i can improvise in some situations; stacking books on the table. but sometimes i just need a tripod, lol! i should have asked for one for christmas. maybe valentines day, lol!
