KINDA LONG.....
OK...so for about 6 weeks now hubby has been having back issues, or so he thought!!! He has been going to the back quack for over a month now and getting cracked, stretched, etc. Not getting better they decide to do a MRI and see that he has some swelling in L4 & L5...keep taking Advil to reduce swelling and ice it. This went on for about 1.5 weeks following the MRI and he is NOT getting better, in fact the pain is worse and he had figured out that it is all in his hip/leg area not back (thought they were realted..cyatic (sp?) nerve type of thing) Well DH FINALLY decides that the back quack is not doing anything for him and goes to see a Orthopedic specialist on Tuesday.. Last nite he has another MRI but on his hip. Calls this morning to see if the results are in.....SHOCKING NEWS: His friggin hip is badly fractured and he needs to have surgery on Monday so it does not become a full break. He will have at least 3 maybe more screws put in his hip and be on crutches for at least 6 weeks.
GOOD NEWS: He will not be in pain when it heals (hopefully)
BAD NEWS: Now I have 5 kids to take care of :cursing:
If you have made it through this entire post I thank you for listening

Oh no!! But at least he'll get it fixed. It's always so frustrating to know that something's wrong, but to be unable to do anything about it. I do feel for you, though!

Oh Christine ((hugs))! I am glad they finally found out what was causing him pain! That is crazy he was seeing that back quack for so long and it wasn't discovered!! I wouldn't go back to that person!
I will send lots of positive thoughts your way!!

yikes...my husband and I are both seeing a chiropracter. It helps somewhat but there have been a few times where he cracked my neck/back and it actually hurt worse afterwards then when I went in. Sorry he is going thrugh that. Did they say how he fractured it? That is just crazy that he had it for so long and nobody ever picked up in it!!

oh no! Thats terrible news, but at least you have some answers and a solution. Anything is better that chronic pain.
Nosy question: Was there some sort of accident that fractured his hip or what? I can't imagine a hip breaking on its own, but then again, I'm not an orthopedist! Just curious. Feel free to not answer if you want... :)

Just a quick comment....
Yes, there are a LOT of bad/incompotent chiropractors out there. But the good ones really are very trustworthy and good at their jobs. And their work DOES help a lot of people with pain and healing.
Ok, jumping off my soapbox now...

No nosy at all.....We think he did it, or maybe even made it worse while he was building our shed. He had to rent a post hole digger thing and had to dig 9 holes that had to be 42" deep. It was a massive machine and the ground was pretty hard so that and then filling all the holes with cement may have done him in. He has had back issues for quite awhile but the Chiro was usually able to relieve the pain for him no problem so ????? He SHOULD have gone to the Ortho guy sooner but I guess there is not much we can do about it now. I just want him to get fixed up and back to the real world ASAP!!!

Hip surgery - dang! Atleast now you know that there was a reason for the pain and it'll be fixed. Hip surgery is a fairly easy surgery (if a surgery can be easy ) and he'll be on his way in no time!
Good luck - if you need anything (even just an ear to vent to), holler!!!

Holy cow! How did he fracture his hip? YIKES, I'm glad he finally went in and found the problem. I wonder if the "back quack" (that makes me LOL btw) made it worse? I hope he heals quickly!

wow. Poor guy. At least the Ortho guy seems to know what he is doing and they didn't do a 'let's wait and see' thing. I'm glad they did the MRIs. A lot of times, they don't do it because it is expensive. But gosh, surgery. What a bummer. So sorry you guys have to go through this.

OMG! That would seriously drive me to drinking! Thanks for sharing too- my DH has CONSTANT back problems- he's healthy, has even lost weight to try to help but still pain daily... maybe he should go get checked out as the doc and chiro and PT haven't helped.
At a healthy weight and only 30 years old, he shouldn't have this kind of pain....
Anyway, I ope your DH recovers quickly and your kids are on their best behavior while he recovers.

WOW Christine! That sucks. I just had to post a quick reply here. I'm a physical therapist and I hate to say this but we actually see A LOT of this type of thing...Not to say chiros aren't good, but with ANY type of treatment modality (chiro, PT, massage, acupuncture, etc) - you should see consistent, STEADY improvement. If you're not seeing that (and especially if it feels worse) - you need to find a new practitioner or have more diagnostic studies done. OH, and someone mentioned they sometimes feel worse after a chiro manipulation...this should NEVER EVER happen!!! I don't manipulate people very often but if it ever causes an increase in pain I NEVER do it again. OK, jumping down from my soapbox.
OH, and in my opinion...those of you who have ongoing back problems should seriously consider finding a good McKenzie Physical Therapist. (this is a very specialized treatment protocol that not all PTs are trained in...they all know OF it, but they don't all know how to actually do it). Here's a website (http://www.mckenziemdt.org/index_us.cfm)where you can find a credentialed therapist in your area.

UPDATE.....
It has been a really LONG day but Bob's surgery went just fine...he had three screws inserted in the ball part of his hip (this is where the fracture started) So all is well..no pain yet since he had an epidural but I am sure it will hurt in the morning!!! I will get him tomorrow if all goes well and we are NOT snowed in  Thanks again for all of your well wishes...I may need painkillers myself come tomorrow!!!!!

I am just so glad they found the problem!! When I had my fourth child (c-section), my dh had a herniated disc, and couldn't do ANYTHING at all. I was so exhausted and had no help. I hope you have friends or family around that can help!
