Ugh, I installed some update on my computer yesterday, and now the whole thing is freaking out, including IE. Now, I've tried FF twice already, and I cannot stand it at all. At all. But I can't deal with my IE spazzing, when I need to be working on it!

Wish me luck LOLOL

I don't get you strange people who like IE more than FF LOLOL

But there is an IE skin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8353) you can put on FF, Jamie - it's in the add-on section at mozilla.org

Agreed Darcy. I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like FF Is missing some important buttons or something.

I wish IE would make skins to have everything be like Firefox. For when I'm on someone else's computer and have to use IE. :p

FF's buttons and things are in different spots. i have always, my entire life, used IE. never really had any problems with it. so to switch over when you're used to something else is a little awkward. i've been using FF for a few days and i'm getting used to where things are. i still sometimes go to the wrong side of the screen for buttons, but oh well.

I, too, am trying to switch over to FF. Been using it for a few weeks now.

Can someone help me understand how to bookmark something? I feel like an idiot...it shouldn't be difficult.  But it seems to work differently than in IE. Please help me have that Ah Ha! moment when I will wonder why I was making it so hard. ;)

Lisa, there should be a "bookmarks" pull down menu at the top of the screen. File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks. Click on it, click bookmark this page.

Up in your command bar there is a Bookmark command. You can choose to bookmark this page and a little popup comes up and you can organize from there where the bookmark goes (if you're big into organizing bookmarks). I f you hit the little arrow next to the Bookmark field, it will drop down and give you a chance to add a new folder, etc.

I organize a lot of my bookmarks into folders on my Bookmark Toolbar so that they are VERY handy to grab - without even having to go through a bookmarks sidebar, etc.

You can also just right-click on the page and choose Bookmark This Page from the fly-out menu.

LOL - okay - how does it download stuff differently?

lizzyfizzy
01-15-2009, 01:36 PM
:D:D:D

when i tried to download stuff it took it to this weird blue box and then i had to literally search through my computer to find 'my documents' to place stuff there. it was odd. it took me like 4 more steps to just download stuff. does your FF do that? cause maybe mine was just a gimp. after i figured out the font change, got all my bookmarks on, etc it didn't bother me...like the look of it. *that* i can get used to...the downloading weirdness i cannot.

When the save/open box pops up set it to default to your desktop or whatever. Then it'll always dl there.

01-15-2009, 01:53 PM
ya, but it was more complicated than that. i swear. i tried FF twice cause i believe you all that it's better. but i honestly cannot stand when stuff doesn't work the way i want it to. immediately. why would FF make their downloading so complicated. why can't it just open up a simple save/run box like IE?

ColleenSwerb
01-15-2009, 01:55 PM
Fizz, I don;t know wtf you're talking about, lol. When I click to DL something, the regular old run of the mill save/run box pops up. I swear on my LIFE!

I don't get why ppl don't like FF. I don't get IE.

When you download it should have a download box pop up that shows all the downloads you've done too. But I personally use an extension that makes them all show up on the bottom of my screen at all times until I am able to unzip them... :) So it's been a while since I did the "regular" method.

lizzyfizzy
01-15-2009, 01:59 PM
well that's hot cause that is most definitely NOT what happened when i tried to download something.

it took me to this weird little blue box. then my download would save to that. it was like a little downloading purgatory. then it would make me do this little song and dance to reoute the (half-way) saved file to my computer. it was a pain in my butt. for real. i tried to go online and figure out if there was a way to change it, but couldn't find an answer...so...off it went.

ColleenSwerb

Hmm....

Ok Fizz, do you want to try it again?
Go to Tools > Options
In the tab for "Main" in the middle of it, is the downloads section.
You can tell it where to save to, or have it automatically ask you every single time where you want it saved.

I have mine to set to download to the desktop, and it shows me to the download box as it's downloading.

That's really bizarre, Lizzy. Do you mean this box:

http://www.breecreative.com/random/lizzydownload.jpg

Because if so, it's already SAVED to your computer and all you have to do is double click any of them and it'll open up the file...easy peasy. And depending on where you have it set up to download to (you may need to go into your preferences to change it) - I think it downloads to My Documents/Downloads on my computer.

lizzyfizzy
01-15-2009, 02:07 PM
yes. that's the gay box. maybe because mine was set to a different location i couldn't find the downloads or something cause lemme tell you. it was a pain in my hind end.

Corey, you should be able to move any of the buttons around (on the toolbars if that's where you're talking about)...just right click on the toolbar and choose "customize"...then you can drag/drop anything on the toolbar and move it around, and add other things to it that you would find useful.

Yeah, see...I never go into my computer to find the downloads...I always just double click from that box and go. But definitely go into your options and tell it where to download to and then you should be able to find things easily the way you are used to. :)

Yea, all you have to do is double click on that and it'll open the file. Or right click on it and select "open containing folder".

lizzyfizzy
01-15-2009, 02:14 PM
but why does it put my downloads in that box at all. i just want them to go directly onto my computer. i want nothing to do with the blue box, really. i hate it.

ditzyscrap
01-15-2009, 02:16 PM
If you go into Tools > Options, you can tell it to not show that box, lol. It only does it because it's easier for people to find them afterwards instead of having to search through the files on their computer... ;)

ColleenSwerb
01-15-2009, 02:16 PM
That box shows you the rate/% of what you're downloading, and then it just keep s track of what you have finished downloading.

The files ARE directly on your computer. If you don't want the box in the options uncheck the box for showing you the downloads as they happen.

The box is really that big deal? LOL!

lizzyfizzy
01-15-2009, 02:22 PM
that box makes me crazy. before when i didn't know i had to tell it to go to a certain spot on my computer that was bad enough. it was like my downloaded files were just non-existent. now that i know it shows me the percentage of download and nothing more it's not really a big deal, BUT i just hate that there are so many steps in getting FF to a state i can use it with ease and familiarity. it's a pain in my arse.

ColleenSwerb
01-15-2009, 02:27 PM
You're kidding right? LOL! It's 1 step to put the files where you want.

If you go to Tools>Options>Downloads, you can tell it to ask you every time so you can choose where a download goes, just like in IE. It's default is just to throw it in some weird download file since everyone will want to do it differently. I download files into different places depending on what it is, so I actually appreciate the feature once I had it set up (the 3.4 seconds it takes :p )

Lizzy - it's okay if you still like IE. I'll still like you :)

Lizzy, take a deep breath. Things change, they aren't always gonna be the same :p.
I learned on an Apple SE, then went to more sophisticated Macs and THEN eventually I went on to Internet Explorer computers. I went from Windows 98 to Windows Explorer to Windows Vista; each one was like a foreign country and i had to rewrite the map, lol.
Friends had been expounding on the greatness of Firefox with me for as long as it's been out but not until late last year I converted. I actually use BOTH,lol.
But I love Firefox and tolerate IE. It's so much faster and so much safer. But it's ok not to like it, we really will love ya if you don't use it, hehe :p

I know I'm a day late on this but I wanted to throw my 2 cents worth in----I'm was like Lizzy and hated that download box too but once I loaded the add-in called status bar, I love the way it works. and I fixed my downloads to automatically to the desktop so there's never any popup window which I also love!!! Click a link and I just get a little status bar at the bottom and the file downloads, it's perfect!!!

Ok I HAD to laugh. Today's post @ The Daily Digi is all about how awesome Firefox is, LOLOL!!
